Be aware! This conversation delves into the March 23rd installment of “The White Lotus,” titled “Denials.” If you haven’t watched it yet, you can catch up on it using a Max subscription.
A significant number of visitors at the main resort in “The White Lotus” Season 3 (airing on the 2025 TV schedule) are concealing secrets, and leading this group is Jason Isaacs’ character, Timothy Ratliff. Despite his pride in his university, Duke University has expressed disapproval towards the show using their name, claiming that it crosses a line.
Timothy Is Pushed To The Edge In ‘Denials’
What were the events leading up to Duke’s complaint? During a vacation that turned out to be anything but peaceful, Timothy discovered that he is being implicated in an illicit business transaction back home. Unaware by his wife Victoria and their kids, their upcoming journey back to the U.S. may result in them losing their wealth, with Timothy potentially facing incarceration.
In “Denials,” the Ratliff patriarch contemplates a drastic solution – feigning his own death by staging a scene where he’s dressed in a Duke T-shirt, suggesting he’s taken his own life using a gun he’d earlier stolen from Gaitok (Tayme Thapthimthong). He mentally pictures the reactions of Victoria (Parker Posey) and their daughter Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook) upon discovering his body. However, later, no longer wearing the Duke shirt, he envisions a gruesome scenario where he first kills his wife before taking his life.
When it comes to subscriptions, one of the most effective ways to save money is by choosing the annual plan option. This is also applicable to Max, where you can enjoy savings of up to 16% on your preferred plan. Additionally, if you prefer monthly payments, their cheapest plan starts at just $9.99 a month. However, I’d highly suggest considering Max as part of the bundle with Disney Plus and Hulu, which offers a more affordable price starting from $16.99 a month. Check out this deal here!
As a movie enthusiast, I’m relieved that the heinous act didn’t occur, and Gaitok successfully retrieved the stolen gun. So, it seems the tragic outcome of murder-suicide for Jason Isaacs’ character has been averted, at least for now. However, let me make it clear that the ordeal was harrowing and traumatic, and in my eyes, irreparable harm has been inflicted.
How Duke Responded To The Latest White Lotus Episode
On March 27th, Frank Tramble, Duke University’s Vice President for Communications, Marketing, and Public Affairs, issued a statement (through TODAY) stating that the university did not endorse or authorize the use of its emblems in the show “The White Lotus”. Tramble further clarified:
Duke values artistic expression and imaginative narratives, yet featuring characters conspicuously dressed in clothing displaying Duke’s officially protected logos can lead to misunderstandings, giving the impression of endorsement or association when there is none in reality.
It’s worth noting that a wide interpretation could be given to the idea that any show wearing university clothing might imply endorsement. However, it’s likely the problematic scene featuring the character Timothy wearing the Duke shirt from the series The White Lotus that causes offense.
Frank Tramble emphasizes a crucial aspect, pointing out that suicide is the second most common reason for student deaths at universities.
I wholeheartedly take issue with The White Lotus’s unauthorized use of our brand. In my opinion, their portrayal of our brand in questionable imagery doesn’t align with our values or the image we strive to project. Frankly, they’ve crossed a line that we find unacceptable.
As a devoted fan, it’s easy for me to understand why Duke might have had reservations about this specific scene, considering the fact that Timothy’s troubles stem from illicit business dealings in his past. It seems plausible that the university isn’t overly pleased with Timothy’s connection to their institution given these circumstances.
As a movie connoisseur, I pondered whether the script would have taken a different turn if Jason Isaacs had donned the Duke shirt during Timothy’s daring full-frontal scene. Alas, that question shall forever remain unanswered. However, I must commend them for championing their students’ mental wellbeing, a cause I wholeheartedly support.
It’s uncertain whether Timothy will wear more Duke merchandise in the upcoming final episodes of the season, but if you want to discover if our predictions about the characters in The White Lotus Season 3 hold true as we near the resolution of the shooter mystery, tune in for the penultimate episode airing at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 30th, only on HBO and streaming platforms like Max.
