On Tuesday, IMAX and AMC Theatres announced an extensive plan to strengthen their existing partnership by implementing IMAX With Laser technology in over 180 IMAX cinemas located throughout the United States.
Currently ranking among the world’s biggest Imax operators, with the title of the largest operator in the United States, AMC will soon boast the most laser location sites globally. This deal represents the largest agreement for such systems that Imax has signed in the U.S. since 2018.
According to the terms of the contract, AMC will also incorporate twelve new IMAX theaters and enhance an extra 68 existing ones with IMAX With Laser technology.
As a gamer, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe when it comes to the IMAX brand. Across the United States and globally, filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts hold this premium cinematic experience in the highest regard. This admiration is mirrored not only in the mutual success AMC and IMAX have achieved together, but also in IMAX’s impressive content library. That’s what Adam Aron, AMC Entertainment’s chair-CEO, shared when announcing our partnership.
In his own words, Imax CEO Richard Gelfond stated, “This agreement marks a significant commitment by the world’s largest exhibitor towards Imax. This is a strong endorsement of our ongoing efforts to enhance our technology, broaden our content selection, and establish ourselves as a global provider of extraordinary experiences.” He further mentioned that the new partnership will enable more AMC patrons to savor “the finest offerings from Imax, whether it’s in Universal City or Lincoln Square, or anywhere in between.
AMC manages eight out of the top ten highest earning IMAX theaters in the United States. Furthermore, AMC’s Odeon Cinemas Group is IMAX’s most significant partner in Europe, operating four out of the five highest earning IMAX theaters in Europe.
AMC announces that this expanded partnership signifies another substantial move in their dedication to technology advancement and premium entertainment. As the leading movie exhibition company in the U.S., Europe, and globally (with around 900 theaters and 10,000 screens scattered across the world), they are committed to offering top-tier experiences.
Imax Corporation, based in New York, Toronto, and Los Angeles, with further offices in London, Dublin, Tokyo, and Shanghai, manages over 1,807 Imax facilities worldwide. These include auditoriums at approximately 1,735 commercial movie theaters, 11 standalone commercial venues, and 61 institutional locations such as museums and universities, spread across 90 different countries and territories.
Filmmakers such as the directors of “Avatar” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” including James Cameron and Joseph Kosinski, have shown a preference for Imax’s technology and cameras. They expressed their admiration for Imax during a panel at CinemaCon on Tuesday, where they are promoting their upcoming film, an F1 movie starring Brad Pitt and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
