Contains spoilers for “NCIS: Origins” Season 1, Episode 16 — “From the Ashes”
The show “From the Ashes” delves into the aftermath of a sexual assault that left Tish Kwa’la (Tonantzin Carmelo) injured earlier in the season, which Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid) has relentlessly pursued despite Tish’s pleas for him to stop. This investigation has driven a wedge between them romantically and ultimately contributes to their divorce. Coincidentally, Joan Lewis’ death provides Mike with the means to solve the crime that harmed Tish. Interestingly, they were not both assaulted by the same man; it was Anthony Cook (Griff Furst) who caused harm to Tish, and investigating Joan’s murder simultaneously resolves two crimes.
In this episode, Tish departs from Camp Pendleton with a smile, heading off towards places unseen. Her relationship with Mike remains unresolved, and we don’t encounter her in any other parts of the “NCIS” universe. Leroy Jethro Gibbs, aged 37 (played by Austin Stowell), doesn’t bring her up or cross paths with her again after this event. However, it’s undeniable that Tish has left a significant mark on Mike, one that will echo through his life as the years pass.
Tish’s rape continues to affect Mike’s investigative style
Mike Franks, portrayed by Muse Watson in his later years on “NCIS”, consistently maintains a steadfast and honorable investigator persona throughout his career. Notably, “NCIS” enthusiasts recall him rising through the ranks to become a NIS/NCIS Supervisory Special Agent, joining the esteemed group known as the Fed Five, which includes Gibbs. Throughout his tenure, he engages in numerous risky operations and even experiences another failed marriage. His commitment frequently extends to rescuing women from human trafficking, prostitution rings, and sexual assault cases, an interest that appears to stem from his investigation of Tish’s rape case — a cause that seems to have become a personal passion for him during his law enforcement career.
As a gamer, I’m excited to share the twist in the story about Mike Franks. Although he won’t have the chance to meet his son, Liam O’Neill, who was the victim in Season 4’s “Iceman,” fate has an ironic turn. Liam will indirectly give Mike a granddaughter, Amira (Zoey Diaz), and a daughter-in-law, Leyla Shakarji (Tehmina Sunny). These two will be the ones he gets to know and protect in the end.
During Season 8 of “NCIS,” Mike won’t meet his end naturally, but rather at the hands of The Port-to-Port Killer. However, before that tragic fate, he will live a full life and save many others. This experience cannot be taken away from him, despite any failed relationships. As for Tish, she currently enjoys her freedom after all she’s been through, and given her past, she truly deserves happiness. For now, we can only speculate about her future updates.
