I’m Excited For M3GAN 2.0 After Learning The Plot, But There’s One Thing That Bums Me Out

In Rob Reiner’s film “Misery,” Kathy Bates’ character Annie Wilkes voices a strong criticism against cliffhangers. She recalls her childhood experiences watching serials in the cinema, expressing frustration when filmmakers would end a story with a hero in dire straits only to provide an easy resolution at the beginning of the next installment. As I delved into the plot of the upcoming horror movie “M3GAN 2.0,” this powerful scene from “Misery” came to mind.

At CinemaCon’s annual gathering for cinema owners today, Universal Pictures shared exciting updates about the upcoming sequel to M3GAN, set to hit theaters this summer. During their presentation, they unveiled a fresh trailer that offered glimpses into the storyline: although the original Model 3 Generative Android has been destroyed, a new autonomous entity named Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno) has emerged from its programming. However, when Amelia starts behaving erratically and causing harm to those involved in her creation, authorities seek Gemma Forrester’s (Allison Williams) help. To put an end to the chaos, Gemma not only reactivates the original programming but also enhances M3GAN with significant improvements, such as making her larger and stronger. As a devoted fan, I can hardly wait to see how this thrilling tale unfolds!

In the style of “Terminator 2: Judgement Day,” when a stronger enemy emerges, it becomes crucial to enlist the aid of the previous adversary in order to stay alive. While this isn’t a completely unique narrative approach in sequels, it has undeniably proven its effectiveness.

Regarding the trailer for M3GAN 2.0, I must admit that it held my interest, as it retained the playful tone from the initial film and added a good dose of chilling horror, such as M3GAN’s revived form being made of plastic, reminiscent of Teletubbies, and a scene where Amelia stands behind a deceased person in a bathtub, using a saw to remove an arm. On the downside, it appears that the 2025 film has failed to address or build upon the sequel hints present at the end of its predecessor.

In case you’ve forgotten, the movie M3GAN concluded with Gemma, Cady (Violet McGraw), Tess (Jen Van Epps) and Cole (Brian Jordan Alvarez) safe after their confrontation with the lethal robot M3GAN. However, there was a suggestion that the programming hadn’t been completely erased; it had merely transformed. The film’s last scene shows Elise, Gemma’s Alexa-like home device, powering up on its own, indicating that M3GAN may have taken control of the system and evolved into a digital menace. Although I expected M3GAN to return to a physical body in a sequel (the “killer doll” aspect is quite appealing), I at least hoped that M3GAN 2.0 would begin with the digital approach and progress from there.

Instead, it appears the subsequent point is introducing a new concept, and although it’s not problematic in itself, I find myself having a slight sense of misgivings reminiscent of Annie Wilkes.

Apart from Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, and Ivanna Sakhno, you’ll also find Timm Sharp, Aristotle Athari, and Jemaine Clement in the cast of M3GAN 2.0. This film is set to hit domestic theaters on June 27th. Our team at TopMob can hardly wait for it – keep an eye out as we’ll be sharing more exciting updates about this eagerly awaited sequel in the weeks ahead!
