Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra recently expressed some thoughts on Netflix’s hit series Adolescence, which has been trending. The four-part show rapidly rose to the number one spot. However, Mishra’s comment about its ranking sparked debates online, with some viewers misunderstanding his intent. Later, Mishra explained that people tend to react quickly without fully grasping the irony in his words. He also noted that his background in Lucknow often gives a hint of sarcasm to his speech.
In a recent post on X (previously known as Twitter), Sudhir Mishra clarified his stance and stated, “People appreciate straightforward speech these days. They express their feelings without action, I’ve read two articles suggesting I’m displeased because Adolescence is so popular in India. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, I am delighted by its widespread appeal as it goes against typical industry predictions.
In another tweet, the director of Tanaav explained that his earlier comments were not meant as criticism of Adolescence, but rather as praise for its daring narrative style. He emphasized how the series manages to break conventional screenwriting norms while still delivering something truly exceptional.
Sudhir clarified that his previous comment was meant as an irony, not a criticism of the show’s popularity. He underscored that contrary to industry beliefs, there indeed exists an appetite for non-traditional narratives.
As a devotee putting this into my own words, when someone accused me of chiding the Indian audience, Sudhir Mishra clarified that he wasn’t criticizing them at all. He explained, “I was speaking in a sarcastic, indirect manner. I’m from Lucknow and have a certain style.
Previously, he chose to discuss Adolescence being the top show on Netflix India, as it had recently gained popularity. He conveyed his astonishment, emphasizing that the series bucked traditional storytelling trends by disregarding common plot devices and adopting a gradual, unfolding narrative, which some argue is not typically appreciated by Indian viewers.
Additionally, he referred to it as outstanding news for quite some time and underscored the impact its success has on shattering traditional industry beliefs.
