Warning: spoilers for Matlock, Season 1, Episode 16 “The Johnson Case” are in play.
I apologize if my enthusiasm for the latest cliffhangers in the 2025 TV schedule’s Matlock series is becoming repetitive, but recent episodes have been quite suspenseful. The surprising revelation that Patricia Belcher’s character, Mrs. Belvin, was the Reddit user who exposed Kathy Bates’ legal character to the Welbrexa mystery has shaken things up considerably. With only three episodes remaining, a significant twist has emerged.
As a devoted cinephile, let me share some thoughts now that I must warn you about potential spoilers for “The Johnson Case.” If you haven’t had the chance to watch it yet, beware! However, allow me to express my excitement before diving in: Skye P. Marshall’s tantalizing tease in Season 1 has grown even more fascinating given Olympia Lawrence’s crucial role in this fresh twist of events.
Olympia May Have Figured Out Matty’s Ruse
At the conclusion of episode 16 on Matlock, we discovered that the title file hid a crucial secret. The Johnson Case turned out to be Olympia’s confidential file about Madeline Kingston (Kathy Bates), also known as Matty Matlock. In an unexpected encounter outside the bus she uses as a disguise for her real limousine home, the apparently destitute single grandmother was bombarded with proof.
It seems as though the partner candidate at Jacobson Moore might have a subscription to Paramount+ given her knack for gathering clues. However, it turns out that Ms. Lawrence has been strategically playing the long game, evidenced by her recent application of the “twist-of-the-week” formula reminiscent of Matlock’s approach.
In the climactic episode of “Matlock”, there was strong evidence linking Julian (played by Jason Ritter) and a wallet connected to Matty’s previous investigation about her ex-husband’s location, which Miss Lawrence used, supporting her solid argument.

But perhaps the decisive factor was the court appearance of Madeline’s sister, Bitsy (Julie Hagerty), since it was there where the license plate for Matty’s limo was discovered. With all these hints assembled, Olympia was compelled to pose a question that leaves us in suspense until next week:
Who the hell are you, Madeline Matlock?
Gosh, I’ve got a feeling this might not go well. Let me lay out my concerns for you, one by one. Here we go!

Matlock’s Nerve-wracking Cliffhanger Could Change Everything
It’s no surprise that the Matlock episode where Olympia appears to be exonerated of any wrongdoing on Welbrexa is the one in which she crosses paths with Madeline. Much like their friendship blossomed, only for Matty to start doubting it when it seemed like her friend was once again under suspicion, the validation comes too late, unfortunately.
This action might not only dissolve their legal alliance, but it might also bring an end to Madeline Kingston’s investigation by terminating it. With Jason Ritter’s lawyer character being the last suspect, who seems both amiable and suspicious, my final guess as the villain in a series like Matlock remains undecided.

Additionally, it’s possible that the intriguing Welbrexa enigma that has dominated Matlock Season 1 could resolve swiftly. Alternatively, it might transform such that Olympia can establish her own autonomous office, with Madeline Matlock in tow, to persistently investigate while avoiding unwanted scrutiny. However, this would depend on the nature of the impending twist, allowing for some degree of collaborative dialogue.
Get ready everyone, as Madeline Kingston makes her comeback on “I Was That Too” this Thursday, April 10 at 9 p.m. ET. If the episode title doesn’t hint at Olympia Lawrence telling Matty they were friends, I’d be quite taken aback.
