Box Office: Best Opening-Weekend Numbers by 2025 Films (Domestic)
- A Minecraft Movie ($157 million)
- Captain America: Brave New World ($88.8 million)
- Snow White ($42.2 million)
- Dog Man ($36 million)
- Mickey 17 ($19 million)
As a movie critic, I’m thrilled to share that both “Brave New World” and “A Minecraft Movie” have made quite an impact at the box office recently. However, it’s important to note the difference in their opening weekend performances. “Brave New World,” with the help of the extended Presidents’ Day holiday weekend (4 days), managed to rake in a whopping $100 million. On the other hand, “A Minecraft Movie” astonished us all by breaking the same barrier in just three days.
Globally, “A Minecraft Movie” continued its impressive run, amassing an additional $144.1 million, pushing its worldwide total to a staggering $301 million. This video game adaptation also boasted the weekend’s best per-theater average with $36,829. Remarkably, it has already doubled its production budget of $150 million, indicating that “A Minecraft Movie” is well on its way to turning a significant profit even in the early stages of its theatrical release.
Despite mixed reviews from critics with a Tomatometer score of 49%, “A Minecraft Movie” has received overwhelmingly positive responses from fans on Rotten Tomatoes, resulting in an impressive 87% Popcornmeter (previously known as the RT audience score) based on over 2,500 verified ratings. Additionally, CinemaScore gave it a “B+”. The film’s strong grades and box office success make it clear why “A Minecraft Movie” has become the first financial blockbuster of 2025.
‘A Minecraft Movie’ Headlines Highest-Grossing Weekend of 2025
2025 has been a financially underwhelming year at the box office for many films, but that all changed when “A Minecraft Movie” premiered and shattered records. As a film enthusiast, I was thrilled to see this animated adventure starring Chris Pratt and Charlie Day claim the number one spot during its debut weekend, surpassing the opening-weekend record previously held by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” In just its springtime opening weekend (April 2023), it raked in an impressive $146.4 million. It’s worth mentioning that “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” eventually became a billion-dollar blockbuster worldwide ($1.35 billion).
2025 Box Office: Highest-Grossing Weekends (Domestic)
- April 4-6 ($195.5 million)
- Feb. 14-16 ($153.9 million)
- Jan. 3-5 ($103.8 million)
- Jan. 31-Feb. 2 ($85.4 million)
- Mar. 28-30 ($78.1 million)
In a dynamic turn of events, Jason Statham’s film “A Working Man” maintained its impact, earning $7.3 million to secure the second position at the box office. On the other hand, “The Chosen: Last Supper Season 5 — Part Two” made its debut in third place with a strong opening of $6.7 million. The concluding chapter of Season 5, “Part Three,” is set to hit theaters on April 11. Simultaneously, Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Snow White” saw a significant drop of 58% between its second and third weekends, but it still managed to garner $6.1 million, holding onto the fourth spot.
Regrettably, the Snow White remake starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot has a significant distance yet to cover in order to reach the $200 million global mark. At present, it’s only made about $153.3 million. The Woman in the Yard secured the fifth position with earnings of $4.5 million. For now, A Minecraft Movie looks set to maintain its leading position at the box office next week, as its main competition will consist of relatively less-prominent releases. On April 11, Rami Malek’s new movie The Amateur, the thriller Drop, and A24’s Warfare are all slated to make their debuts in the 2025 box office.
Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler’s upcoming film, “Sinners,” set to release on April 18, is expected to provide a significant financial boost during springtime. The supernatural horror movie is predicted to earn over $40 million domestically during its opening weekend, as per Deadline’s report. Some projections even hint that the movie might surpass the $50 million mark in the US and Canada.
