Gerard Butler’s Next Disaster Film Sequel Is Bigger Than Geostorm!

It’s not uncommon for a movie or TV series to appear on Netflix subscriptions, triggering a renewed interest in it. This week, it appears that “Geostorm” experienced such a revival. While this news is thrilling, fans of the film have another reason to get excited: Another movie featuring Gerard Butler is set to receive a sequel.

When Geostorm debuted on Netflix, it quickly climbed into their Top 10 rankings, landing at the No. 4 spot. This suggests that many viewers chose to watch the movie, despite its low Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 18%. Although it has since dropped in popularity, I’d call that a significant achievement. What’s even more remarkable, however, is that another film starring the Butler, which went through an unconventional release, has been granted a sequel.

In 2020, I had the chance to watch “Greenland,” a movie that, unfortunately, didn’t receive the recognition it deserved upon its release due to various factors and delays brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Eventually, it was released for home viewing, and with a Max subscription, I got to see it towards the end of that year. Despite the challenges faced during its release, the film directed by Ric Roman Waugh surprisingly performed well financially, which might be the reason behind the announcement of a sequel titled “Greenland: Migration.

It’s unfortunate that the 2020 disaster movie, “Greenland,” which boasts a 77% critics approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, didn’t get a typical cinema release. This film, featuring a family battling for survival as a comet hurtles towards Earth and endangers humanity, is exceptionally well-made, surpassing the expectations of many viewers. Gerard Butler delivers a standout performance in this critically acclaimed movie.

In various action/thriller films like “Plane”, “Olympus Has Fallen”, and “300”, Butler has proven his mettle. Yet, the film “Greenland” offers a different side of him, with a more grounded, earthy portrayal that truly highlights his talent.

After the occurrences of its prior installment, the narrative unfolds with migration being the next step for the central family. They had managed to survive in a bunker during the initial movie, but are now compelled to depart from their sanctuary and venture on a perilous trek across a devastated Europe in search of a new dwelling place. Filming has concluded, and the film is set to be distributed by Lionsgate later this year. Given its promise as an exciting blockbuster, the release of a trailer might entice viewers to revisit the original movie as well.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating that “Migration” receives the recognition it deserves, much like how its initial release should have been met. This film seems primed for success on streaming platforms such as Netflix. If a film like “Geostorm,” which faced critical backlash, managed to find an audience and even reach the Top 10 on Netflix, then a title with more depth and substance could undoubtedly garner even more attention. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for this sequel to not only match the quality of its predecessor but also find a dedicated viewership.

This year, the migration in Greenland is anticipated to decrease at some point, coinciding with the 2025 film schedule. The first movie, however, can still be streamed on Max. If you’re seeking additional excitement, I recommend watching Geostorm too.
