‘The Botanist,’ ‘Lonely Musketeer,’ ‘The Poet’ and ‘Peacock’ Set for Beijing’s New Filmmakers Section

The Beijing International Film Festival has revealed the 15 films set to be shown in the Forward Future segment of its upcoming 15th installment, which takes place later this month.

In 2014, they introduced the Forward Future section, a platform to spotlight and boost emerging filmmakers, particularly those showcasing their debut or sophomore films. This year, I’m honored to be part of the jury for this program, alongside some incredible talents. Heading our panel is legendary Hungarian director Béla Tarr, known for his works like ‘Damnation’, ‘Satan’s Tango’, and ‘The Man From London’. Joining him are Chinese actress Jin Chen (also recognized as Gina Jin), Chinese actor Song Yang, Japanese director, screenwriter, and actor Sabu, and Swiss director and screenwriter Cyril Schäublin. It’s going to be an exciting journey discovering the fresh talents in cinema!

The Beijing organizers guarantee an “innovative” approach, “distinctive” presentations, and “state-of-the-art” cinematography for the Forward Future segment, offering a peek into the thoughts and worries of filmmakers worldwide, particularly those in their youth.

The featured films in this program come from debutant Chinese directors, including “The Botanist” by Jing Yi, fresh from its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, and “Floating Clouds Obscure the Sun” by Tao Shen. Additionally, Bernhard Wenger’s “Peacock,” an Austrian director’s work, is part of the lineup. For more information on the complete selection, please refer to the details below.

The 15th edition of the Beijing festival takes place in the Chinese capital April 18-26.

Jiang Wen, a renowned Chinese actor-director known for films like “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Let the Bullets Fly,” will lead the main jury of an upcoming festival. This panel will present the Tiantan Award. Other esteemed members on this jury include Joan Chen, a Chinese American director and actress famous for “The Last Emperor”; David Yates, a British director known for “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”; Ni Ni, a prominent Chinese actor; Teemu Nikki, a Finnish director; Vincent Perez, a Swiss director and actor; and Tim Yip, an art director from Hong Kong.
