40 years on, I still find myself cheering for The Goonies, and it looks like we’re one step closer to another adventure with the gang! Word has it that a sequel to the iconic 1985 film is now officially in the pipeline, spearheaded by none other than Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus. Opinions are divided, of course, with some eagerly anticipating the next chapter while others believe the original masterpiece should remain untouched. Regardless, it seems like The Goonies 2 might finally see the light of day, and hearing from some of the original cast members about what’s been holding things up, and how the new film will be nothing short of extraordinary, has only fueled my excitement!
Yesterday on “The Today Show,” some original cast members from “The Goonies” made an appearance. This group included Corey Feldman, Sean Astin, Kerri Green, and Martha Plimpton. During the interview, talk naturally turned to the possibility of a sequel, as news emerged in February that it was indeed being developed, with Steven Spielberg and Jonathan Kasdan (Columbus) producing, alongside Potsy Ponciroli who is set to write the script. When asked why it took so long for this project to get off the ground, Astin suggested that it was largely due to Spielberg’s involvement, implying that he is also the driving force behind the upcoming “Goonies 2.”
Following the announcement, Steven Spielberg reached out with a poster that read, “I’m still a Goonie, aren’t you?” He’s long been eager to produce a sequel, but it hasn’t materialized due to not finding the perfect fit. His endorsement of this upcoming project is a strong indication that it will indeed come to fruition, and given his involvement, there’s every reason to believe it could be extraordinary.
At this point, the development of The Goonies 2 is still in its initial phases, so there’s been no official announcement about the storyline. However, fans have been brainstorming ideas for quite some time, ranging from a continuation with the original characters to a new tale featuring their fictional offspring. The creative control lies with Ponciroli, Spielberg, and Columbus, who will decide whether any of the 1985 original characters will make an appearance in the sequel.
You Can’t Have ‘The Goonies 2’ Without the Original Cast
It appears that none of the original cast members from The Goonies sequel have been approached yet, as per Corey Feldman’s statement, who played Clark “Mouth” Devereaux; however, they are open to the idea and would consider participating in The Goonies 2 if invited.
Spielberg and Chris Columbus are working on a project, though our involvement is still uncertain. For now, let me just say they have a plan, and I wish them the best. If they approach us in the future, we’ll evaluate their proposal then.
It’s been expressed by other cast members, such as Astin and Ke Huy Quan, that they’re thrilled about a sequel in the past, suggesting it’s likely they’ll connect with Spielberg at some stage if they haven’t already. Given the cloak-and-dagger nature of Hollywood, especially when it comes to large legacy sequels like this one, they might be keeping things hush-hush until the perfect moment arrives. Regardless, _The Goonies 2_ is edging ever closer to reality, disregarding the skeptical voices on social media.
