Scarlett Johansson, Harris Dickinson to Take Directorial Debuts to Cannes

This year’s Cannes Film Festival will see the first-time directorial ventures by Scarlett Johansson and Harris Dickinson.

The two actors primarily worked off-camera during the production of their films, which will make their debut under the category ‘Un Certain Regard’ at Cannes, as revealed by Thierry Frémaux and Iris Knobloch during a press conference held in Paris on Thursday.

Johansson, renowned for her roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers series, is set to debut the film Eleanor the Great. The story revolves around a 90-year-old woman from Florida who unexpectedly forms a friendship with a 19-year-old New York City resident. June Squibb, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jessica Hecht, and Erin Kellyman are among the stars featured in this production.

Simultaneously, the rising star and “Babygirl” actor, Dickinson, who’s recently joined the A-List, will make his feature film debut with “Urchin.” This film follows the story of a vagrant (Frank Dillane) wandering the streets of London. However, Dickinson isn’t abandoning acting altogether – he is scheduled to portray John Lennon in Sam Mendes’ Beatles biopics for Sony, with an anticipated release date in 2028.

Meanwhile, Cannes’ competition selection is brimming with renowned filmmakers such as Kelly Reichardt (The Mastermind), whose art-heist drama stars Josh O’Connor and John Magaro amidst the Vietnam War setting; Joachim Trier from Norway, who revisits the Croisette following his 2021 film The Worst Person in the World with Sentimental Value, featuring Renate Reinsve; and Jafar Panahi, the Iranian dissident director, returning to Cannes competition this year with his new drama A Simple Accident.

This year’s standout films feature the following hot picks: Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme,” starring Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, and Tom Hanks; Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague” with Guillaume Marbeck and Zoey Deutch; and Ari Aster’s “Eddington,” starring Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal, and Austin Butler. All three are scheduled to debut on the Croisette.

This year’s festival featured a record-breaking 2,909 different movies as part of its selections. You can find the complete list of films for the 2025 Cannes Film Festival right here.
