YOU WON’T BELIEVE What’s Getting Rebooted Next: Beetlejuice, Matrix, Minecraft & More!

Over the past two years, David Zaslav, head of Warner Bros Discovery, has emphasized the need for the studio to generate more content from its most prominent intellectual properties. Since then, a Harry Potter TV show has come to fruition, a new Lord of the Rings movie is in production over a decade after The Hobbit’s release, and numerous other well-known franchises are slated for further development. In a recent interview with Deadline, Warner Bros Pictures co-chairmen/CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy provided some intriguing glimpses into upcoming projects. De Luca mentioned:

Drew Goddard is in charge of scriptwriting and direction for the upcoming Matrix film. Meanwhile, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and Jay Roach are working on an Ocean’s Eleven prequel. Matt Reeves is producing a remake of Them, collaborating with Michael Giacchino who directed Marvel’s Werewolf By Night. Lastly, Andy Serkis is directing a project, but details about other projects can’t be disclosed at this time.

Later on, Abdy highlighted their excitement about reviving some beloved intellectual properties for the screen once again, a task they have not undertaken for over four decades in certain instances. She pointed out:

Abdy later expressed how ecstatic the team feels to be resurrecting some timeless IPs on screens, with some of these projects being absent from our screens for over forty years. She underscored:

In addition to things we’re already looking forward to, Andy Serkis working on the Gollum movie and Drew Goddard writing a new Matrix sequel have us even more thrilled. Amblin, along with Chris Columbus, is developing fresh installments for the Gremlins and Goonies series, which we’re really excited about. We had an exciting meeting with Philippa Boyens regarding Gollum, and we anticipate receiving the script in May. The Cat in the Hat and the second Dr. Seuss adaptation, co-directed by Jon M. Chu, are also on the horizon, promising some fantastic content.

Warner Bros. Discovery Is Heavily Investing in Sequels, Reboots, and Remakes

Many filmmakers openly acknowledge that coming up with an original movie concept and getting it approved can encounter numerous obstacles. One major challenge is that studios frequently lack enthusiasm to invest in unproven projects, especially when they possess a vast collection of iconic and adored franchise titles within their vaults.

2024 saw a trend where every highly anticipated release was either a sequel or reboot; no original projects found their place on the list. This pattern persisted in the end-of-year box office, with 15 out of the top 20 movies being connected to an established franchise in one way or another.

2018 is seeing a good number of franchise films hitting the big screen, including Marvel productions as well as titles like “Mission: Impossible – Fallout”, “The Karate Kid: The Next Generation”, “28 Years Later”, “Double Trouble Fridays”, “Tron: Ascend”, “Predator: Outlaw Country”, and “Avatar: Fire and Ice”. Many of these are likely to make it onto the list of this year’s top-grossing films. And, given current trends, we can expect more intellectual properties to be developed and released in the years ahead.
