[This story contains MAJOR spoilers for the April 17 episode of 911, ‘Lab Rats.’]
For the first time in eight seasons, 911 has killed off a member of its core cast.
In the April 17 episode of ABC’s drama series, named “Lab Rats,” Fire Captain Bobby Nash (played by Peter Krause) selflessly gives up his life to protect his team members. Prior to his tragic demise due to a lethal virus that he and his fellow firefighters had been striving to control, Bobby has a poignant farewell with his wife, Sergeant Athena Grant-Nash of the LAPD (portrayed by Angela Bassett).
In a lengthy explanation regarding his exit from the series, Krause concedes that devoted fans of the show might find this departure disheartening and even justified in their feelings. After all, it’s a significant departure. However, he supports the choice made by co-creator and executive producer Tim Minear who, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, justified it as fitting for his character to experience a tragic end, serving as a conclusion to his entire storyline within the show. Additionally, Minear posed that if there was a character whose death would resonate most deeply among other characters, Krause’s might be the one.
Krause states, “It wasn’t just an audacious artistic decision for such a daring series; Bobby Nash was crafted to endure sacrifice and his character fits perfectly. Characters like him symbolize the bravery of first responders who put their lives on the line daily so that others may live. His narrative arc pays tribute to them.
Apart from Krause, he also expresses gratitude towards his fellow actors, the show’s executive producers, production team, and technical advisor, as well as the genuine first responders who perform similar roles as depicted on 911 over the past eight seasons. Here is his complete statement: [Statement follows]
I’m grateful to Dana Walden, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear for giving me the opportunity to bring such a multi-layered character, Captain Bobby Nash, to life over these nine years. It has been a privilege for me to embody this role.
In October 2017, he helped us delve into themes like sorrow, remorse, rage, and dependency while examining his bond with a higher entity, forgiveness, and mercy. As he embarked on his recovery journey, we witnessed him unite and connect with both his fresh firehouse family and his new family with Athena Grant, where he discovered affection and approval. We didn’t forget to have some good times as well. It was a delightful experience.
Grateful for collaborating alongside our technical advisor, Chief Mike Bowman, and genuine firefighters, I’d like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in helping me infuse authenticity and realism into the character within our grand emergency setting. Your thoughtful and encouraging words have truly touched me.
I appreciate working with Chief Mike Bowman, real firefighters, and everyone else on making my character feel genuine within our big emergency story. Your nice compliments really mean a lot to me.
I understand that many fans are disappointed by this outcome, and rightfully so. After all, it’s a loss. However, it was more than just a risky move on an innovative series. The character of Bobby Nash was intentionally written to make such a sacrifice, which fits perfectly with his role in the story. Just as first responders put their lives on the line every day so that others can live safely, Bobby’s storyline pays tribute to them. At 911, we salute all the brave men and women who perform these dangerous jobs and work tirelessly to keep us safe.
At times, our production proves quite demanding, with extended work hours, complex stunts, and intricate disaster scenes. We couldn’t pull it off without the collective effort of everyone involved.
I’d like to express my gratitude to everyone across all departments, as well as ABC, 20th Television, and Fox. Our team is quite extensive.
I want to give thanks to everyone in every department, along with ABC, 20th Television, and Fox. We’re a wide-ranging group of people.
I’ll deeply miss my 911 family, an extraordinary team whose professional skills are unparalleled. The writers who continually amaze us with their creative tricks. Directors entrusted with the same task. And all the exceptional guest stars throughout the years, including Jennifer Love Hewitt and the cast in the call center.
I’ll deeply miss my dear partner, Angela Bassett. Her strength and kindness, our intertwined hands – all these were a beautiful bond that ended prematurely. Sending you endless love.
You’ve been my rock, Tim Minear and Brad Buecker, and among the finest in your field. I’ll surely miss your presence.
OR
Tim Minear and Brad Buecker, you’ve been like pillars to me, outstanding professionals in our industry. I’m going to miss you both dearly.
Ultimately, I’ll find it hard to bid farewell to my cherished, rowdy crew from Station 118: Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, Oliver Stark, Ryan Guzman, and Anirudh Pisharody. This is a difficult goodbye. Keep being wild, but maintain professionalism and complete the mission. Misfit heroes need camaraderie. That’s our firehouse way. Share this with the next recruit who joins us.
This version aims to make the text more conversational and easy to understand while retaining the original message about bidding farewell to a group of colleagues, encouraging them to maintain their unique spirit yet remain professional, and emphasizing the importance of teamwork in a firehouse setting.
This has been one wild adventure. I thank you all, with all my heart.
