Why Ben Affleck Wouldn’t Want His Daredevil to “Tangle” With Jon Bernthal’s Punisher

Ben Affleck has no qualms about moving on from his Daredevil character, particularly when it involves not squaring off against Jon Bernthal’s Punisher in “The Accountant 2”.

Affleck, who played Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the 2003 film “Daredevil”, recently discussed with CinemaBlend how Marvel has evolved through time, a development that led to Bernthal’s return as Frank Castle/The Punisher for the series “Daredevil: Born Again”.

Born Again”.

Affleck praised Bernthal’s portrayal of The Punisher, stating, “His performance was excellent.” He added that the series ‘Daredevil’ presented an engaging narrative. This show was produced before Kevin Feige took over as head of Marvel, which brought a consistent tone to the subsequent movies. One of the key challenges was striking the right balance between the absurdity of costumed heroes and the seriousness of their roles, while also deciding how much humor or self-awareness to include. Additionally, he pointed out that around this time, visual effects were becoming more convincing, providing a platform for talented actors like Bernthal to shine.

He went on saying, “I’ve heard about the latest incarnation of Daredevil; I haven’t watched it myself, but I’m a big fan of the character. I wish him all the success he deserves, but I’d rather avoid any confrontations with his Punisher.

I had the privilege of embodying Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, across two thrilling seasons on Netflix’s The Punisher from 2017 to 2019. Unfortunately, the series came to an end. But, guess what? This year, I stepped back into those boots for Daredevil: Born Again, and in February, there was some amazing news – a special edition of The Punisher is in the works for Marvel Television!

At SXSW last month, Bernthal hinted at an upcoming project. “It’s going to be a deep and intense story; Frank isn’t planning on shedding light on the darkness,” he said to The Hollywood Reporter. “It won’t be an easy watch. I’m not sure if that aligns with Netflix’s usual style, but that’s what it’s going to be,” he added. “Rest assured, it won’t be a lighter version of The Punisher.

Just as Bernthal did, I too made a comeback to the superhero realm, but this time for DC. In 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” 2017’s “Justice League,” and the upcoming 2023 film “The Flash,” I found myself once again donning a cape and mask.
