This summer, the Hayward Gallery in London will be showcasing a significant retrospective dedicated to the renowned Japanese artist, Yoshitomo Nara. With over 150 pieces produced throughout his 40-year career, this exhibition invites visitors to explore the captivating universe of one of Japan’s most acclaimed artists.

Renowned for creating characters reminiscent of childhood, adorned with large eyes and a hint of rebellious spirit, Nara frequently employs his angelic figures as a means to delve into real-world problems and advocate for change. His work reflects an intrigue in the personal human journey as well as the broader political context within which humanity resides.

Raised during the peak of the Vietnam War, Nara’s brothers’ involvement in the student movements sparked his lifelong passion for environmental concerns and global peace. He found a connection with the communal spirit of the hippie culture and felt that music had the ability to drive change, which he expressed. He also believes that visual art shares this powerful influence.

Nara, who hails from the tranquil town of Hirosake in Aomori prefecture, Japan, was deeply influenced by the Far East Network, a radio station catering to US military bases during his formative years. As a youngster, he would spend hours seeking out American songs on vinyl records. His musical preferences gradually expanded from the melancholic blues to punk and new wave, a trajectory that reflects his enduring passion for music. This love for music, intertwined with an unyielding spirit of youthful rebellion, remains a significant aspect of Nara’s artistic journey.

Nara shared, “In my professional endeavors, I consistently employ my past experiences as a lens to understand my present self and the world around me. For me, childhood represents a period of self-formation, which I strive to embody in my work. This perspective instills a sense of liberation within me, essential for crafting pieces that resonate authentically. It encourages me to approach complexities with an innocent, uninhibited mindset.
