As a die-hard Marvel fan, I’ve been fortunate enough to witness some truly formidable villains grace the big screen. Characters like Thanos, Killmonger, and Loki have left an indelible mark on many of us, often topping our “favorites” lists. In the upcoming movie Avengers: Doomsday, it seems we’re about to add another name to that list!
Indeed, the idea of casting Robert Downey Jr. as a villain has sparked debate among fans, with some appreciating his past heroic roles and others eager for something new from him. Yet, there’s no denying that Downey Jr.’s star power will undoubtedly draw audiences in. Intriguingly, Marvel Studios seems to be considering another renowned actor to delve into the darker side of villainy, following his breakout performance in what promises to be the best sci-fi movie of 2025: myself.
Who Does Mark Ruffalo Play in Mickey 17?
Ruffalo’s Kenneth Marshall Is a Nasty Dictator
In my opinion, as a movie critic, Mark Ruffalo portrays an ambitious and manipulative politician who harbors ominous intentions for the extraterrestrial planet of Niflheim, where Robert Pattinson’s character Mickey resides alongside others. The colony is governed by Marshall, whose charisma is almost cult-like. He exploits fear and hostility to sow discord among the inhabitants and aspires for a ‘pure’ colony, which raises serious questions about his true intentions.
In the original text, it seems that the character Marshall supports the exploitation of lower classes by using replicants, which are machines made to perform menial tasks, similar to Mickey. I would like to propose a revised version that focuses more on action and less on negativity:
As time goes on, Marshall suggests utilizing clones for labor purposes within the colony, but it’s also revealed that he plans to employ destructive means, such as bombs, against the alien population in the area.
Marshal harbors a desire for the elimination of numerous alien species, even infants, as a means to acquire a unique sauce from their remains. His ruthless nature resonates with several politicians in reality. This is particularly evident through his practice of exploiting individuals he considers inferior to perform hazardous tasks. Fortunately, one clone managed to sacrifice himself alongside Marshal, contributing to the liberation of the colony. However, this act fails to conceal the terrifying nature that Marshal possesses.
In a departure from his usual heroic roles, Mickey 17 showcases Ruffalo’s versatility as an actor by portraying a sinister character who callously disregards life. This role is one of the reasons why critics adore the movie and it has garnered a high rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 7.0/10 on IMDb.
Mark Ruffalo Should Play the Maestro in the MCU
The Maestro Can Be Mark Ruffalo’s Most Terrifying Hulk
In the Marvel Universe, the Maestro is an antagonistic version of the Hulk originating from a different universe (Earth-9200). This alternate Hulk possesses Bruce Banner’s intelligence and carries out numerous destructive operations in a dystopian future called “Future Imperfect.” He was genetically altered through a nuclear plot masterminded by A.I.M. and M.O.D.O.K., and eventually, he sought revenge against these entities as well as heroes within his reality. Over time, conflicts between him and the Earth-616 heroes also ensued. In some instances, he even formed alliances with Doctor Doom. This underscores that Maestro is a cunning villain who cannot be relied upon, willing to take any means necessary to accomplish his objectives and overall goals.
In this scenario, “The Maestro” is a character who governs a realm called Dystopia and has ambitions to dethrone God Emperor Doom. This conflict sets up an intriguing dynamic for Mark Ruffalo’s portrayal of Hulk in the upcoming “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which is planned for release in 2027. The character of “Marshall” serves as a preliminary demonstration of this concept.
It is hinted that “The Maestro” may target not only the Avengers but also other heroes with whom he has had conflicts in the comics, such as Wolverine. This could provide an opportunity for Marvel Studios to leverage its star power by having Ruffalo’s character, as the mastermind, engage in a power struggle with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doom, thereby reimagining the “Science Bros” dynamic within the MCU.
The Maestro Comic Details
First Appearance | Year of Debut | Creators |
The Incredible Hulk: Future Imperfect #1 | Dec. 1992 | Peter David, George Pérez |
Marvel Studios might reprise Chris Evans as Senior Steve Rogers, who finds himself surprised to encounter an apparently familiar foe. Additionally, Hugh Jackman could return as Wolverine, pursuing the menacing Maestro. It’s worth noting that in the original stories, The Maestro has caused significant destruction among Marvel characters. He has even clashed with heroes from the 2099 timeline, suggesting that there is no reason to overlook Ruffalo’s potential. To date, viewers have witnessed Ruffalo as both the brutal Hulk and the intelligent Smart Hulk in physical form.
The Maestro has the ability to transform the character into an even more formidable Green Colossus, one who would likely have withstood the Mad Titan’s attacks. This version of the Hulk is undoubtedly one of the most intimidating versions of the Emerald Behemoth ever conceived. Mark Ruffalo possesses the talent to portray anything but a benevolent character. With the upcoming “Secret Wars” introducing multiple realities, this Hulk could face off against the heroic Hulk, She-Hulk, and Skaar, son of Hulk, demonstrating the destructive capabilities of gamma power in a sinister form. Fans eagerly await more stories that explore the complexities of Bruce Banner and his kin.
In the Disney+ “She-Hulk” series, there wasn’t much of Bruce (Bruce Banner/The Hulk), and when he did appear, it was mainly for comic relief and as a punchline in a show that focused more on humor. This might not be satisfying for fans who are eager for more traditional Hulk movies or believe the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made him too soft. However, Mark Ruffalo’s performance shows he can convey both emotional depth and intimidation, potentially allowing audiences to experience a completely new aspect of the Hulk as he unleashes his true monster side.
Mickey 17 is now in theaters.
