The Royals: Bhumi Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter react to audience losing interest in romantic genre; ‘In the midst of all the testosterone…’

Bhumi Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter are preparing for their leading roles in the upcoming Netflix India series titled “The Royals”. Besides them, the show also boasts well-known actors such as Zeenat Aman, Chunky Pandey, and Sakshi Tanwar. At a recent trailer unveiling, Bhumi and Ishaan were queried about the perceived decline in romantic films being produced nowadays. In response, Bhumi stated, “The romantic genre is often overlooked, and amidst all the masculinity and action, ‘The Royals’ will offer a refreshing change.

As per SCREEN, Bhumi Pednekar pondered over the dwindling popularity of romantic movies, remarking that in the 90s, numerous stars rose to fame by starring in love stories. She voiced her worry that the romance genre is now overlooked and emphasized the difficulty actors encounter when convincingly depicting love with someone they are not familiar with.

Bhumi pointed out that it’s not entirely clear why there seems to be a decline in the writing of romantic scripts, but she thinks this might be a seasonal fluctuation. She went on to say that The Royals stands out as a pleasant deviation amidst an influx of high-octane, action-packed content and expressed optimism that the show could reignite enthusiasm for love stories.

Apart from Ishaan Khatter, the discussion was joined by his thoughts as well. He pointed out that the movie industry tends to experience various stages. He hypothesized that perhaps the overabundance of romantic movies in the past could have contributed to a creative rut, resulting in audiences becoming less engaged.

Instead, Ishaan suggested that fans of love stories might want to back the show “The Royals” to spark a return of such narratives, as he feels a void in this genre has arisen lately and left many yearning for it.

He also pointed out that “The Royals” offers a delightful new perspective on the romance genre, as it presents an original narrative revolving around a monarch and a common person.

Ishaan made clear that while some people thought the show would be a historical drama, it actually offers so much more. Excited about romantic roles, he mentioned that early in his career, he was involved in just one sad love story, but working on The Royals for seven years has been delightful.

The series is set to premiere on Netflix on May 9.
