Bryce Dallas Howard, who directed several episodes of “The Mandalorian,” has surprisingly disclosed that she has discussed with Lucasfilm the possibility of a Mace Windu standalone film. Known as one of the most powerful Jedi in the Star Wars universe, Mace Windu is distinguished by his unique purple lightsaber. Although it appeared that his story concluded in “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” when he was thrown out a window by Palpatine, there are some fans who speculate he may still be alive. It seems this idea remains open to consideration.
In conversation with “The Direct”, Bryce Dallas Howard, the director of “The Mandalorian”, mentioned that she had previously discussed with Lucasfilm her desire to produce a Mace Windu standalone project. She elaborated on this by saying:
…”I headed directly to Dave Filoni and asked, ‘Could we discuss Mace Windu and his current status? I mean, is he alive or deceased?’
According to the same report, Samuel L. Jackson, who played Mace Windu, has shown enthusiasm for a possible comeback in the past, and that’s not all; he mentioned this alongside Bryce Dallas Howard.
There’s a significant history of one-handed characters reappearing in Star Wars… The only person I’ve ever mentioned this to about returning was Bryce Dallas Howard, as we recently worked together. Since she directs episodes for ‘The Mandalorian,’ I jokingly asked her if she could arrange it for me. She responded with admiration, saying she loves me and thinks I’m fantastic! So, I said something like, ‘Give me another chance… Put me back in the game, I’m ready!’ I’d learn to wield a lightsaber with my left hand if necessary. Could you help make it happen, please?
Considering that both Bryce Dallas Howard and Samuel L. Jackson seem keen on reprising their roles as Mace Windu and have expressed interest in collaborating on this potential project, it leaves us wondering: Might Star Wars eventually grant us a Mace Windu solo film?
How Likely Is A Mace Windu Spin-Off, Really?
There’s Certainly Interest In The Fanbase
It’s become increasingly evident that the Star Wars movies and series are hard to foresee. Things like Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen reappearing as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, which seemed unlikely not so long ago, were once just hopes. Even recent developments, such as Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars: Starfighter movie, have taken us by surprise.
It’s quite plausible that a standalone Mace Windu series could happen, given the unexpected turns Star Wars has taken since Disney took over. Bryce Dallas Howard expressing interest in directing, Samuel L. Jackson being open to it, and fans clamoring for his return make it feel like a real possibility.
Our Take On A Possible Mace Windu Spin-Off
Mace Windu And Samuel L. Jackson Both Deserve More Time
From a dedicated fan’s perspective, I must admit, this decision is likely to stir up quite a debate – much like many others in this beloved franchise. On one hand, there are those who rejoice at Samuel L. Jackson’s return; on the other, some believe it’s time for Star Wars to move forward. Personally, I feel that both the character and the actor have more than earned a comeback. After all, Samuel L. Jackson has kept his passion and reverence for this role alive for over two decades since he first appeared in Star Wars, and that dedication deserves acknowledgment.
Mace Windu was not fully utilized in the prequel trilogy, and I believe he deserves another opportunity within this franchise due to his rich history and intricate portrayal of both light and dark aspects. There’s an abundance of unexplored backstory about Mace Windu’s mastery, his unique position between the Jedi Council and the Sith, as well as some unexpected actions he took, particularly in the books. A spin-off series could delve into these aspects. Although a Mace Windu spin-off might not materialize, it’s fascinating to learn that the director of The Mandalorian, Bryce Dallas Howard, is open to the idea.
