As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement over the news that the 1999 teen romantic comedy gem, “10 Things I Hate About You,” featuring the captivating duo of Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, is being transformed into a Broadway musical! The creative team behind this project boasts an impressive array of Grammy and Tony awards, promising a truly memorable experience.
As a gamer, I’m super excited about the upcoming stage adaptation! It’ll feature music by Carly Rae Jepsen, who’s known for her hit “Call Me Maybe”, along with Ethan Gruska. The story is based on a book from Lena Dunham, one of the stars from Girls, and Jessica Huang, an experienced playwright and librettist. Christopher Wheeldon will be handling the direction and choreography, while musical arrangements and orchestrations are under Tom Kitt’s guidance. Can’t wait to see how this all comes together!
The initial movie produced by Touchstone Pictures, drawing inspiration from William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” play, was a significant step for Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. This film boasted an impressive ensemble cast featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Allison Janney, and Larry Miller. In this production, Heath Ledger took on the role of Patrick Verona, the charming yet rebellious heartthrob tasked with pursuing Kat Stratford (portrayed by Julia Stiles), a headstrong and stubborn character, as part of a storyline centered around a high school in a town on the Pacific Northwest coast during the run-up to the prom.
In a touching moment, Stiles’ character Kat reads a heartfelt poem to Ledger’s character Patrick, pouring out her pain and affection for him while listing ten things she finds difficult about him. The movie, which explores these emotions, was initially written by newcomers Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, and directed by Gil Junger.
The stage version of the production, currently being worked on, is being developed by Mike Bosner in collaboration with Buena Vista Theatrical. Notably, the movie “10 Things I Hate About You” was previously adapted into an ABC Family series featuring Miller, Lindsey Shaw, Meaghan Martin, Ethan Peck, Nicholas Braun, and Dana Davis as its stars.
