Over the past few years, I’ve noticed an intriguing surge in popularity for the isekai genre, a realm that has taken both the Japanese animation (anime) and comic book (manga) worlds by storm. This captivating genre revolves around characters who are transported into alternate realms, be it through death or some other mystifying occurrence. The evolution of anime and manga over the years is nothing short of astounding, consistently birthing fresh genres along with their sub-categories.
The Isekai genre, which originates from light novels and manga, has gained significant attention in both these mediums as well as anime. While the manga side of Isekai is gradually growing, it’s already quite popular in light novels and anime. Some of these stories are adaptations from previous Isekai anime, but many are original works, offering unique interpretations of characters traveling to different worlds.
Revised on April 23rd, 2025 by Sage Ashford: It’s no wonder that the isekai genre continues to thrive, so it’s only natural that new isekai manga are being produced. With this in mind, we have expanded our list to include even more outstanding series.

Titled “I Got A New Skill Every Time I Was Banished, this extraordinary isekai tale follows the journey of the protagonist, Ed, who has unfortunately lost his way home. His solitary route back to his original world involves repeatedly joining hero teams in various dimensions, only to be exiled before they accomplish their mission. The story unfolds after Ed has traversed a hundred worlds, on the brink of returning home, when he catches a glimpse of the realm where he was initially banished. Upon discovering its grim destiny, Ed employs his 101st skill, a unique power that can be utilized only once, to rewind time and rectify the situation.
In a seemingly ordinary show about a character with extraordinary abilities, there’s more depth for those who persist. Watching Ed navigate through New Game Plus scenarios provides plenty of entertaining twists on familiar concepts. Furthermore, the series doesn’t limit itself to exploring just one world; instead, after completing his tasks in each realm, Ed embarks on a quest to another.

For over a century, I’ve savored the tranquil existence of a high elf named Aesir. With centuries more to live, he finds himself yearning for adventure beyond his familiar elven realm. Though unaccustomed to the world outside, Aesir embarks on a journey, forming bonds with newfound companions and crafting a richer, more meaningful life.
In my perspective, living the “Lazy High Elf Life” is quite similar to the captivating world of Frieren. Much like our protagonist Frieren, Aesir stands out as a peculiar immortal character who seizes each moment of his extended lifespan with zest and enthusiasm. While the storyline is primarily light-hearted and refreshing, it occasionally delves into deeper topics, such as war and slavery, adding depth to the narrative.
However, what makes this series unique among isekai titles is its scarcity of references to Aesir’s past life. This lack of connection to his former world gives it a distinct flavor that sets it apart from traditional isekai stories.

As an ardent fan, I find myself embarking on an extraordinary journey, following the tale of Natori Midori, a young office lady who was let go due to her excessive generosity towards others. In this moment of uncertainty, Natori is mysteriously transported into the realm of my beloved gacha game, assuming the role of Lapis Tenebrae’s familiar. Initially, Lapis is portrayed as one of the antagonists, but as I delve deeper into her character, I am compelled to understand her true essence. Determined not to meet an untimely demise at the hands of the game’s heroine, I resolve to create a world where Natori can flourish and thrive.
As an enthusiast, stepping into the shoes of the “Fed-Up Office Lady,” I find myself drawn to the captivating world of antagonist isekai narratives, where instead of being the main character, I serve those in power. In this tale, I embody Natori, a young woman yearning for self-worth, pouring all my energy into assisting Lapis – finding purpose in her service.
For fans of isekai with a twist, this series offers a delectable blend of sweetness and potential heartache, as the love triangle unfolds. The drama deepens as Natori finds herself caught between the villain and heroine of the game, their affections becoming a complex web that I navigate with intrigue.

Summoned to a Peaceful Fantasy Realm
The story revolves around Kaito Miyama, a third-year college student living an uneventful life. However, his routine is interrupted when he receives a summons to another world. To his surprise, this isn’t about battling demons or saving the realm. Instead, he’s told it’s just a vacation spot. The heroic deeds of a warrior from over a century ago have already vanquished the demon king, ushering in an era of tranquility. Despite the lack of conflict, Kaito gets to traverse this new fantasy landscape until he can return home.
Caught Up in A Hero’s Summons adopts a leisurely pace when it comes to the isekai genre, giving off a vibe similar to a fantasy travel manual rather than an action-packed adventure. Although Kaito actively seeks out adventures, this tale unfolds more like a collection of secondary missions. Yet, with Kaito’s magnetism drawing in powerful figures, the story never lacks excitement.

The narrative of “Yakuza Reincarnation” unfolds around Nagamasa Ryumatsu, an elderly yakuza whose past ties date back to the Showa era. Despite his best efforts to maintain integrity, he ultimately falls victim to betrayal that leads to his demise. Upon reincarnating, he finds himself in a fantastical world as Princess Sanaria Ryu Lundberg. Inhabiting Sanaria’s body, Ryumatsu leverages his power to combat corruption and strive for justice within a corrupt realm.
In the well-known monthly publication Monthly Sunday Gene-X, Yakuza Reincarnation stands out as an intriguing alternative in the isekai manga genre. Its ambiance appears more ominous compared to typical offerings, contributing to a narrative that feels mature and nuanced. This series could prove enjoyable for fans of isekai, but it’s likely to resonate most with readers who are weary of contemporary isekai tropes or seek a change from the norm.

Makoto Misumi led an ordinary existence until one fateful day when he uncovers the astonishing truth: his parents were natives of another realm, granted temporary passage to our world on condition that they sent one of their offspring back to their original home. Fate selected Makoto, who was bestowed with extraordinary powers by the deity Tsukuyomi. Upon his arrival in this new domain, he finds the goddess uninterested in him due to his ordinary appearance. As a result, he’s compelled to reside among the semi-human inhabitants, gradually creating a meaningful life for himself and those around him.
Tsukimichi effectively balances the tones of a deep isekai narrative with humorous moments. Although the story often revolves around Makoto and his companions’ antics, it also presents a formidable Demon Lord as a constant danger. For those seeking something more substantial than typical comedy, there’s an engaging world-building element to appreciate.

Kazuya Souma, a young man, harbors a straightforward aspiration: serving in public office. However, this ambition is momentarily derailed as he’s transported to a different realm, where he finds himself unexpectedly assuming the role of ruling the struggling nation of Elfrieden. Despite never having reigned as a king before, his understanding of politics and insights from the contemporary world gradually enable him to alleviate the country’s debt crisis and restore its prosperity.
The Realist Hero is an exceptional light novel and anime, and its manga version holds up remarkably too. The series offers an engaging take as our protagonist, Souma, navigates perilous situations and saves a nation using merely his humanities education. This entertaining twist provides a refreshing change for audiences who have grown weary of isekai characters relying on overpowered abilities to triumph.

Hailing from the same author as the iconic isekai series “Fushigi Yugi,” “Arata Kangatari” is another captivating isekai tale. In this story, set in a realm where every thirty years, a new princess is selected to serve the sword-spirits known as Hayagami, the time has come to select a new one. However, since no women have been born for that specific period, a young boy named Arata must disguise himself as the princess until they can find a suitable replacement.
Initially, Arata encounters additional predicaments when the princess gets mysteriously slain, and he’s wrongfully accused. Fleeing for survival, Arata faces more substantial troubles…until an unexpected twist makes him swap identities with a contemporary Japanese Arata. The manga “Arata Kangatari” offers a complex plot right from the start, but its advantage lies in allowing readers to progress at their convenience. Renowned for her skill in developing captivating plots and characters, Yuu Watase ensures that readers will soon be thoroughly immersed in the story.

The manga titled “Knight’s & Magic” was serialized in the seinen magazine “Young Gangan” from 2016 to 2022, concluding with its 17th volume. The narrative revolves around a die-hard mecha enthusiast who is reborn into another world as Ernesti Echevalier, a member of an aristocratic family. In this realm, magic abounds and is frequently employed to power colossal robots that safeguard the populace from creatures. With his dream finally coming true, Ernesti pours all his energy into mastering the art of piloting a Silhouette Knight, with aspirations of one day designing his own.
In the captivating anime “Knight’s & Magic,” one finds a remarkably engaging story within the realms of the isekai genre. Ernesti, our protagonist, yearns for nothing more than to construct and operate colossal mecha robots, a sentiment many can undeniably resonate with. The narrative primarily revolves around Ernesti’s quest to enhance his mechanical companion, followed by delving deeper into the enigmatic, otherworldly environment he now inhabits.

In 1993, one of CLAMP’s initial creations, “Magic Knight Rayearth,” was first published in the shoujo magazine “Nakayoshi.” This story is an early example of the isekai genre and revolves around three middle school girls who are transported to the fantastical realm of Cephiro. In this magical land, they discover that its survival depends on a being called the Pillar, whose prayers sustain Cephiro. The girls are tasked with finding the Pillar if they wish to return home, but their quest uncovers the hidden truths about the world of Cephiro, leading them deeper into its mysteries.
The anime “Magic Knight Rayearth” is renowned, yet many believe it shines even brighter as a manga. Although the anime is excellent, CLAMP’s unique artistry brings the narrative to life more effectively in its original form. It’s rare for magical girl and mecha genres to intersect, but the initial blend was exceptional.

Way back in 2003, prior to the craze of isekai genre in manga, Silver Diamond offered readers a thrilling blend of fantasy journeys and everyday life. The narrative revolves around Rakan Sawa, initially just a typical high school student with an interest in gardening. However, it doesn’t take long before his routine life gets disrupted.
Embarking on an extraordinary adventure, I – a humble gardener with a unique connection to the earth, discovered this when a mysterious alien named Chigusa landed in my backyard! Unbeknownst to me, I’m the last remaining “sanome,” a rare cultivator of magical plant life. Joined by Chigusa, I set off on a perilous voyage to his desolate home planet to rejuvenate its dying flora. Silver Diamond, a series that captivated Japan, also made waves in America, becoming one of the first manga series to be licensed here, all thanks to the visionary efforts of English publisher Tokyopop.

With exceptional world-building that rivals even Mushoku Tensei, The Faraway Paladin stands out among its peers in the genre.

In all its versions, the tale of Hero revolves around Naofumi Iwatani, an ordinary individual, who’s suddenly summoned to defend a magical realm from impending destruction. Unlike his three Cardinal Hero comrades who are armed with weapons, Naofumi is bestowed with the Legendary Shield, the one artifact that’s not meant for attack.
In Rising of the Shield Hero, Naofumi finds himself shunned by other heroes and nobility due to poor relations, causing him to become an outcast within their group. However, with a world-threatening crisis looming, Naofumi doesn’t let his isolation stop him. Instead, he forms his own party and trains diligently to emerge as a hero. Readers of this series are likely drawn in by its intricate world-building and the unique character of Naofumi, who stands out from typical isekai protagonists.

Hailing from the creator of Hellsing, Kouta Hirano, Drifters is an unusual isekai story that stems from a manga. As you might imagine, it deviates significantly from typical isekai series. Unlike the usual summoning of a lone individual to a mystical alternate realm, the world of Drifters summons a multitude of legendary figures from history.
In the fiery Battle of Sekigahara, samurai Shimazu Toyohisa is slain but finds himself in an enchanting realm inhabited by elves and sorcerers, where he joins their battle efforts. This world teems with warriors, from Oda Nobunaga to Jeanne d’Arc, who either strive to protect the magical sanctuary or aim to annihilate it. With its relentless battles, the series Drifters is perfect for viewers craving intense combat sequences.

The initial “Fushigi Yugi” series gained immense fame in the ’90s. The spin-off, titled “Genbu Kaiden“, is set nearly a century prior and focuses on the character, young woman Takiko Okuda. Unfortunately for her, everything seems to be going awry – even her father, who’s more engrossed in his research than he is in the loss of his wife.
In anger, Takiko grabs her father’s research titled “The Universe of the Four Gods,” which has been translated into a journal, and decides to leave with it. Upon opening it, however, an unexpected event occurs: she is transported to another world. In this new realm, she discovers that she is destined to fulfill the role of the Priestess of Genbu, a prophecy that will resonate for many years to come.

The life of Takafumi Takaoka is irrevocably altered when he discovers his uncle Yosuke has emerged from a nearly twenty-year coma. Yosuke shares that he’s spent the past seventeen years in an alternate world, where he honed his skills as a powerful magician. Since Yosuke has been absent for such a prolonged period, they mutually decide to support each other with their newfound knowledge and experiences.
In this unique twist, Takafumi chooses to leverage Yosuke’s abilities to establish a YouTube channel as a means of earning income, all while Takafumi experiences a world he’s long been absent from. This intriguing narrative, titled “Isekai Ojisan“, is a refreshing exception in the isekai genre, having initially appeared as a seinen manga in the publication ComicWalker, rather than originating from a light novel. It’s also crafted with enough intelligence to subtly bypass some of the overused tropes that may have grown tiresome for fans.

Accompanied by others in similar predicaments, they gradually uncover that they’re trapped within an immersive RPG called “Grimgar,” set in a mystical realm where self-preservation is paramount. Haruhiro forms his own team and dedicates himself to mastering the art of survival in this strange new world.
The manga titled “Grimgar of Fantasy & Ash” stands out among other isekai series because its protagonists aren’t already powerful upon introduction. Instead, they are depicted as ordinary individuals who must conquer their fears and evolve into warriors, making their tales more relatable and authentic. Moreover, the survival of party members isn’t a given in each mission, which means readers might have to bid farewell to some beloved characters.
