“I Had Not Done Anything Like [This Role] Before, It Was Too Good To Pass Up.”

The idea of participating in “Neighborhood Watch” was thrilling for both actors. Jeffrey Dean Morgan mentioned that the script was initially sent to him by Jack, and being a fan of Duncan Skiles’ previous film, “The Clovehitch Killer“, he anticipated something similar. However, as he put it, “It wasn’t what I expected. It was more like a nostalgic throwback to… Midnight Run, which I adored. That made this project a unique and different opportunity for me.

Apart from showing his admiration for “The Clovehitch Killer”, it was disclosed that Jack had contacted Skiles’ representatives with the intention of meeting him. “We finally got together in LA, he turned out to be such a kind person. As time went by, I received a script for Neighborhood Watch, and its unique and appealing tone really struck me. I adore [Simon and Ed]. I’m fond of films that revolve around unconventional friendships“. “Jeffrey and I shared an unforgettable experience on this journey, and it was the best part by far. Working with him day in and day out and tackling this project together was simply amazing.” Jeffrey acknowledged his admiration for Jack, stating that “working with Jack was the main draw for me. I’ve never encountered such a compact team working on a feature film before. Frankly, it astounds me that they managed to bring this project to life, let alone our motley crew of jokers! I suspect Duncan, our director, didn’t catch a wink during the three weeks we filmed, given the constant stream of crises.

In the midst of sharing anecdotes about assisting with cable management during filming, Jeffrey showered Duncan Skiles and Cinematographer Luke McCoubrey with nothing but praise for their work on the project. “I recall [Jack] and I even contemplating contributing our own funds to secure a second cameraman,” Jeffrey reminisced. “Duncan was somewhat resistant, as we were essentially saying ‘Why wouldn’t you want a second camera?’ His response was surprising – he had Luke, and Luke could operate one camera like most people use three. He’s practically a superhero.

Our partnership is forged not out of friendship, but out of a shared desperation that binds us together. When I witness what appears to be a woman being kidnapped, there’s no one else I can turn to for help. So, I enlist the aid of Ed to unravel the truth. Jeffrey, the director, was thrilled by the complexity he found in Ed’s character. Unlike his usual roles as tough guys like Joe Kessler or Negan, Ed offers a refreshing change, showcasing a different side of his acting talent.

There’s an older fellow who seems quite miserable, struggling with his life’s direction. Ed, being someone driven by purpose, found himself at a loss when he was let go from his job as a security guard. That is until a young boy appears… Just a slight crack in the door provides Ed with renewed purpose. But this relationship transcends mere purpose and evolves into a profound friendship where they mutually support each other through various challenges. I found it heartwarming, and I believe the creators did an excellent job of portraying their bond on paper.

1) “Spending time with Jack to enjoy a fantastic game of tennis, just exchanging shots, was simply perfect for me.” About Jack, Simon found himself drawn to his complex personality. “There were aspects of him that I recognized as familiar terrain because they resembled roles I’ve played before. However, there was an extensive amount that was entirely fresh and new for me.

My main hurdle was ensuring an authentic portrayal, especially when it came to characters like Simon who struggle with mental illnesses. I immersed myself in numerous books and crafted a detailed background for him. His backstory was crucial, encompassing aspects of his upbringing as well as the nature of his delusions. What guidelines does he follow that are foreign to the rest of us?

I discovered a useful shortcut in maintaining a distinct physicality that reflected clear and calm moments, as well as those where the schizophrenia took center stage. I made sure to depict these shifts accurately while also conveying the underlying humanity of the character. My goal wasn’t merely to portray the illness, but rather to bring the man, Simon, to life.

The indie filmmaking approach, with its reduced pressure on scale and heightened emphasis on acting within a more confined environment, provided Quaid with a unique sense of liberty. Whenever any of us introduced an unexpected element into our performance, the way the character responded was delightful. I recall a specific moment during a kitchen scene where Duncan was hidden around a corner, laughing from behind a monitor. I didn’t anticipate this film being humorous, but the interactions between characters sometimes brought about an unexpected humor. We aren’t making fun of these characters; rather, their relationship had a comedic aspect at times.

Looking Ahead To The Boys And Walking Dead: Dead City

For Jack, the conclusion of “The Boys” left him feeling a mix of happiness and sadness. Playing the role of Hughie on the series for five seasons significantly impacted his life in various ways as Quaid shared, “I owe so much to it. I’m incredibly thankful for everything that came with it. I owe Eric Kripke an immense debt for turning things around for the better. Without The Boys, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to work on this movie alongside Jeffrey, and honestly, I don’t know what I would have done without it. I’m deeply appreciative of all these new people in my life now.

In the concluding stages of the superhero satire, Quaid shared that playing Hughie for five seasons and witnessing his complete character development has been a truly fulfilling experience. Prior to this show, I had only worked on a series that lasted one season, and several pilots that weren’t chosen. This is my longest-running character to date, and it feels incredibly rewarding. This season, I’ve been especially mindful of ensuring viewers can follow Hughie’s progression.

Initially, his character resembles an infant. Then, in the following season, he’s much like a curious child discovering life. In the third season, he acts out as a rebellious teenager. By the fourth season, he undergoes significant growth and maturity due to a major event. This season, however, his character has fully matured into a man. I find it captivating to play this role with newfound confidence, something that’s not been explored before. I believe fans will find this intriguing.
