Modifications (often referred to as “mods”) are crucial elements that keep many timeless games alive and well-loved for decades. The longevity of numerous games can be attributed to the continuous support provided by their modding communities. These modifications serve various purposes, such as addressing bugs, improving graphics, or even overhauling the entire gaming experience. For instance, “The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion” has been graced with a devoted modding community for nearly two decades.
Modifications can transform anything in games, from enhanced textures to radical overhauls, and the world of Cyrodiil in Oblivion is always open to creative expression. Now, Bethesda has unexpectedly released a remastered version of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, much like an unforeseen Daedric artifact. Typically, studios excel at remastering games, but the initial response from the community was curiosity about what would become of the mods developed over the years. So, let’s discover if your old .esp files are still compatible with this updated game.
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered renewed the old classic

On April 22, 2025, Bethesda unveiled the updated version of the classic game Oblivion. This new iteration was developed using Unreal Engine 5, significantly enhancing the graphics from its 2006 release to make it compatible with contemporary platforms. While retaining the original’s open-world structure and key gameplay aspects, the visuals have been dramatically improved. The world of Cyrodiil now benefits from ray tracing, higher quality textures, and enhanced models, resulting in a more stunning appearance.
Furthermore, changes were made to the control schemes and user interfaces to ensure they work seamlessly with contemporary hardware. The Persuasion and Clairvoyance systems now boast a more intuitive user interface, with streamlined menu navigation for easier use. Accessibility has been enhanced, and additional autosaves have been incorporated. Players can look forward to smoother camera controls in both first- and third-person perspectives.
The remaster was created by Bethesda Game Studios and Virtuos’ Paris team. From 2021 onwards, they utilized Unreal Engine 5 for its visual improvements while preserving all the distinct characteristics that made the original unique. This bundle encompasses both significant expansions of the initial game—Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles—to deliver a complete, up-to-date Oblivion experience in one package.
Bethesda’s official stance on Oblivion‘s mods

Bethesda has clarified in their FAQ that they do not currently support mods for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, a departure from their usual supportive stance towards modding in their games. However, players have been cautioned that using mods may lead to some complications, and it is recommended that they remove the mods and check the game files on Steam or through the Xbox app prior to playing.
Although Bethesda doesn’t explicitly endorse mods for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, surprisingly, most of them function just fine. A significant number of old Oblivion mods, especially .esp files, have been confirmed by numerous users to be compatible with the Remastered version. However, it’s worth noting that some may require minor adjustments.
In the remastered edition, you can use many mod files from the original game just by putting them in the right folder and listing their names in the Plugins.txt file. This feature, where old mods work with the new version, has been a delightful surprise for the community. However, complex mods like detailed overhauls may cause the game to crash primarily due to the remaster’s Unreal Engine 5 layer. The modding community is actively addressing this issue as well.
Mods that work in the Remastered version and some OG Oblivion mods

In the world of Oblivion Remastered, some widely-used modifications include those that alter the Faster (And Slower) Leveling and Slower Item Degradation. A 2008 mod, which introduces Daedric armor into the starting area, has been said to function correctly following manual installation. In addition, Qarl’s Texture Pack II and Adoring Fan desktop shortcut icon replacer are also reportedly functioning well in the updated version, although some graphical adjustments were necessary for the former.
The community of modifiers is delving into the structure of Unreal Engine’s .pak files to make significant changes to key game components. Such alterations could lead to substantial enhancements down the line, such as complete texture upgrades and distinctive races, much like the Mystic Elf race from the initial version of the game.
As a dedicated fan, some modifications I eagerly anticipate seeing either functioning or ported from the original game are:
1. My beloved Qarl’s Texture Pack, which significantly enhanced the game’s visual appeal by incorporating high-resolution textures, making everything appear more vibrant and detailed.
2. The Unofficial Oblivion Patch, a valuable collection of bug fixes that addresses issues Bethesda never resolved, ensuring a smoother gaming experience for all players.
3. Last but not least, the Oblivion Character Overhaul. This mod breathes new life into character appearances, as the original character models from Oblivion have started to show their age and this update is highly anticipated by many fans like myself.
Other popular choices such as “Enhanced UI for a Better City, Gold-infused Charms from Aurum, Swift Reactions of Deadly Reflex” significantly transformed the gaming experience within “The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion”. These mods fundamentally changed the way players interacted with the game, and they eagerly anticipate such enhancements in the upcoming remastered version. Whether these improvements are a result of backward compatibility or new advancements, players would certainly appreciate similar opportunities in the remastered edition.
