Charter Communications, a leading provider of cable and broadband services, saw a decrease in the number of pay TV customers leaving their service, as revealed in their financial report for the first quarter, which was published on Friday.
During the most recent quarter, under the leadership of President and CEO Chris Winfrey, the company experienced a loss of 167,000 residential video customers – a decrease compared to the 392,000 subscribers lost in the same period a year ago. In total, the cable giant lost 181,000 video customers during Q1, which is fewer than the 405,000 customers lost during the first quarter of 2024.
By the close of March 31st, 2025, Charter boasted a total of 12.7 million pay TV subscribers. This increase can be attributed to the company’s implementation of new pricing and package options for its video services, which were introduced in September 2024.
In an effort to combat the trend of American consumers canceling their cable subscriptions, also known as cord-cutting, the cable giant has launched its joint venture with Comcast, called Xumo streaming platform. This initiative aims to counteract the loss of video customers. The first-quarter revenue for Charter reached $13.73 billion, slightly higher than the previous year’s figure of $13.67 billion.
In the first quarter of 2025, net income for Charter shareholders increased by 10% to reach approximately $1.21 billion, up from $1.1 billion earned during the same period the previous year.
As a gamer, I’d say, “By the end of the first quarter, I was one out of 29.1 million gamers still hooked up with Charter for my Internet, mobile, video, and other services. That’s a drop from the 29.7 million we were back then, representing a decrease of about 2.1%.”
During the initial three months of the year, our company saw a decrease in about 60,000 residential and small business internet clients. This reduction was partly due to the Los Angeles wildfires causing some disconnections. However, it’s worth noting that this decline was less severe compared to the same period last year when we lost approximately 72,000 customers.
With major cable companies like Charter shifting their focus towards mobile services, they managed to add 495,000 new residential mobile accounts this year, marking an increase compared to the 473,000 customers they signed up during the same period last year.
