Once more this week, Adobe MAX, the company’s main event, made its return to London, where they unveiled numerous updates for their Creative Cloud collection of apps. These updates included fresh features in Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and Firefly – Adobe’s array of generative AI models. To begin the keynote speech, Adobe’s David Wadhwani referenced artist David Hockney, characterizing him as an early pioneer of digital art tools similar to Photoshop and suggesting that he “welcomed groundbreaking concepts” – a veiled reference to the ongoing debate about generative AI models and their impact on the creative sector’s growth.
Initially, Firefly took center stage as Adobe unveiled a brand-new web-based application, crafted utilizing its advanced Firefly Image Model 4 and Firefly Image Model 4 Ultra generative AI models. The latter model, as stated by Adobe’s Kelly Hurlburt, was designed with an emphasis on enhancing hyper-realism. Additionally, Adobe announced that the Firefly Video Model is now accessible to all users, enabling them to generate content using its straightforward Text to Image, Text to Video, or Image to Video tools. The company also introduced Scene to Image, which is currently in beta phase and empowers users to effortlessly create references for generating content.
Apart from Adobe’s unveiling, they introduced Firefly Boards, which they referred to as an “AI-led, innovative method for creating moodboards.” Following the keynote, we had a chance to speak with British filmmaker and entrepreneur Brandon Baum, and when asked about his favorite announcement of the day, he said, “Firefly Boards was something truly exciting that I didn’t expect today. It left us speechless!” Despite the existence of similar apps, Firefly Boards is uniquely integrated into Adobe’s Creative Suite, empowering users to utilize all the advanced AI-driven tools and features available across its diverse applications.
Last month, Adobe marked the 35th anniversary of its popular photo editing software, Photoshop, by introducing a new mobile app designed specifically for phones. At Adobe MAX London 2025, Photoshop was the main attraction as the brand unveiled several exciting updates and enhancements for its flagship software. One of these innovations is the Select Details feature, located within the Object Selection tool, which enables users to quickly and accurately separate intricate image components – like hair – a task that usually takes longer when performed manually. This new functionality is available on both desktop and mobile versions of Photoshop. Although the recently released Photoshop mobile app is only accessible for iOS users at this time, Android enthusiasts can look forward to it in the near future as Adobe has confirmed they are developing an Android version, set to launch soon.
This week, Photoshop revealed fresh updates, introducing the innovative Adjust Colors feature. Employing AI technology, this tool pinpoints the predominant colors in an image and offers on-canvas controls that let you effortlessly modify them directly. Additionally, Adobe showcased a revamped Hue and Saturation Adjustment panel. Enhanced with larger sliders for improved control over edits, the new design enables users to seamlessly alter the overall appearance of an image and make precise, intuitive color adjustments, all without manually applying masks or adjustment layers.
Following Adobe’s initial venture into generative AI with Firefly in March 2023, their product line has grown rapidly, incorporating more AI-assisted features. While some in the creative sector have expressed concern that this technology might replace human creativity and work, Brandon Baum holds a contrasting view. In fact, he asserts that “each new technological era has paved the way for a wave of fresh, emerging creative talents.” Baum contends that embracing AI within the creative industries will serve to eliminate obstacles and foster the emergence of a new generation of artists, designers, filmmakers, and more. Similar to Adobe, he regards generative AI as a “tool”, something designed to facilitate creativity rather than replace it. For him, the focus isn’t on finding tools that automate the creative process; instead, it’s about discovering tools that can alleviate tedious tasks, allowing artists to concentrate on what they truly enjoy and excel at.
As a devoted enthusiast, I firmly believe that periodic changes are essential to make way for fresh perspectives. If we don’t, there’s a risk of the same individuals always holding the reins, and their narratives becoming the only ones told.
