On Thursday, filmmaker Adam McKay from the movie “Don’t Look Up” spoke at a virtual gathering organized by a community activist group aiming to coordinate a nationwide work stoppage. He motivated the attendees to bring an end to the current flawed and polluted economic system.
McKay participated in a gathering for the “General Strike 4 Resignations” organization, where he was alongside Chris Smalls – the ex-president of the Amazon Labor Union and one of the main figures in the upcoming 2024 documentary titled “Union“, which McKay helped produce as an executive.
In certain activist and labor communities over the past few years, the concept of a nationwide work stoppage, whether practical or impractical, has been gathering traction as a potential method for altering the current state of affairs in the United States. This strategy suggests that if a significant number of workers, both unionized and non-unionized, collectively refuse to work across the country, they could amass enough influence to bring about policy changes.
Two prominent union leaders, Sara Nelson (from the Association of Flight Attendants) and Shawn Fain (from the United Automobile Workers), have expressed support for an idea. Fain even urged other unions to coordinate their labor agreements so they expire on May 1, 2028. This move would allow for a significant work stoppage by organized workers if it were widely adopted. Despite not yet being common practice, this strategy is gaining attention.
McKay openly showed his convictions during the town hall meeting on Friday. He candidly admitted, “I’m here because I’m deeply concerned.” The gathering, which barely surpassed 30 individuals throughout the discussion, included him. “I have two daughters and a wife whom I cherish, and I developed friendships with numerous climate scientists,” he explained. “This led me to advocate for our government to address this disaster [climate change] that’s unfolding before our very eyes. Now, I’m from Hollywood, so we have resources, we influence people. You might think, ‘Who are you to speak?’ But let me tell you, the officials in Washington D.C., London, and other Western nations seem indifferent towards what’s happening.
McKay expressed that he’s been attempting for years to sway the Democratic left, but with no success. “Ultimately, I realized they’re reluctant to upset their financial backers,” he said. “At this point, both parties seem useless. So, what do we do? Our solution is to shut down this malfunctioning and polluted economy.
During our discussion with Smalls and representatives from General Strike 4 Resignations, we occasionally touched on various topics such as the Blue Origin all-female space mission, AI, Palestine, socialism, among others. The filmmaker committed to donating $250,000 towards a strike fund to assist those in the southwestern United States with their living expenses if a general strike were to occur.
If you’re financially well-off and listening to this, it would be quite unrealistic of you not to contribute to that same fund, according to McKay.
The director likewise stressed the significance of disseminating the concept of a general strike by casual conversation, noting that his experience in the media sector has demonstrated to him that such interactions are constantly being replicated within the industry. He emphasized the immediacy of climate change issues and their repercussions, including escalating global temperatures.
He emphasized that our purpose seems to be for each of us to express, ‘Down with social media, down with the media.’ Turn to your neighbors and say, ‘Let’s shut this off.’ He described it as a destructive force. In fact, he has met numerous scientists and economists who agree. His message is clear: we have the power to turn it off, and we truly can.
Lately, McKay has been deeply involved in addressing climate issues, notably donating a substantial $4 million in 2022 to the Climate Emergency Fund and taking on a director’s role. In the year 2023, he established the nonprofit entity Yellow Dot Studios, whose purpose is to mobilize people about climate change through engaging short videos that confront the misinformation spread by oil companies for decades and echoed by many elected officials, media outlets, and other influential figures, as stated on their official website.
During Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election by accumulating electoral votes, McKay, who used to identify as a Democratic Socialist, expressed on X that it is now appropriate for him to part ways with the Democratic Party. He is considering joining either the Green Party or Working Families Party, but he remains open to other suggestions.
