One Edge Henry Cavill Has Over Other 007 Possibles, According To One James Bond Expert

Recently in Hollywood, a hot topic has arisen: Who will succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond? With Craig stepping away from the role, fans and betting markets have been speculating. Amidst the uncertainty surrounding the James Bond franchise, one expert believes Henry Cavill could be the front-runner for the new 007.

As a film aficionado, I’ve always held a soft spot for the enigmatic Bond character, having delved into the subject matter in my previous works. In an exclusive chat with The New York Post, I confidently assert that Henry Cavill is the top contender for the role, mainly because he came close to securing it once before. It’s a well-established pattern in Hollywood for actors who miss out on roles initially to eventually get another chance at them. Here’s what I had to say…

In Bond films, it’s common that the actor who almost got the role previously is given a second chance in the following movies. For instance, Roger Moore was considered for Dr. No in the initial Bond movie. Similarly, Timothy Dalton was looked at during the early ’70s.

Indeed, this statement holds up well in its essence. Pierce Brosnan can undeniably be added to the “second time’s a charm” list. He was initially lined up for the role following Roger Moore’s departure, but had to withdraw due to prior obligations. Despite seemingly missing out on other roles as a result, fate brought him back to the opportunity when he became available again.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder over what could have been if Henry Cavill had donned the tux and played James Bond instead of Daniel Craig. Back in the day, director Martin Campbell, who masterfully directed Casino Royale, was on the verge of casting Cavill for the role, but alas, it didn’t happen. Now, it’s hard not to envision him as a leading contender for the iconic 007 role today.

It’s worth noting that due to a significant shift in power, the usual trends may not apply this time with the James Bond franchise. Unlike before when Eon Productions, under the guidance of producer Albert R. Broccoli and later his daughter Barbara, made the casting decisions, Amazon MGM Studios now holds full creative control over the series. Even though Eon remains part of the project, if their preferred actor from the last round isn’t approved by Amazon, the selection won’t proceed.

The upcoming James Bond film is currently under development, but it’s still in its initial phases. At present, there doesn’t appear to be a script written, and it’s unlikely that discussions about casting will happen until everyone involved finalizes the type of Bond movie they want to make. It’s possible that Henry Cavill, who was considered too young for the role previously, may be too old by the time they start filming.
