The recently premiered Marvel film, Thunderbolts, has garnered acclaim for its focus on misfits, but it also tackles an essential issue that warrants attention: mental health. Beyond the storyline of a team of unconventional heroes compelled to collaborate on a perilous mission, this production delves into the reality of psychological wellbeing. Actress Florence Pugh, who understands this topic given her personal awareness, finds it significant that it’s addressed in a Marvel movie. In this film, Pugh reprises her role as Yelena Belova, an ex-assassin from the Red Room who has endured traumatic experiences within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 29-year-old emphasized the significance of addressing mental health issues within the Marvel universe. She exclaimed, “Wow, it’s monumental! It’s a significant matter that this theme was developed using a Marvel budget, and they were passionate enough about it to make it the central focus. And that’s crucial, incredibly important for everyone at the moment.” Pugh first appeared in the MCU with Black Widow (2021), playing Yelena Belova who is Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow’s sister. She also expressed similar sentiments regarding this project, labeling it as “a tale of siblinghood that deeply explores grief, suffering, abuse, and being a survivor—and enduring as a survivor.
What grabbed my attention about that tale was the power dynamics depicted among those women and girls. I thought, “Wow, countless young viewers will watch this film, learn, and feel inspired.” The same sentiment applies here. This production will reach many – adults, children alike. For those who need it, they’ll recognize themselves or their loved ones in it, and it’s a joy to be part of a project that can positively impact so many lives.
Pugh’s Thoughts are Similar to the Ones of ‘Thunderbolts*’ Director Jake Schreier
From the very beginning of my involvement in the Marvel project, I’ve been eager to create something unique and thought-provoking. Having honed my craft by blending complex characters with dark humor (as seen in Netflix’s Beef), I felt confident that there was an audience yearning for such a film. To me, Beef served as an unexpected guide in addressing mental health issues, but of course, the scale at which Thunderbolts* tackles these themes is far greater.
These topics are no longer exclusive; they are issues that everyone grapples with, making them universal concepts. Even though it might seem daunting for a major production like Netflix or Marvel to tackle such themes, there’s an audience eager for these stories. We may find them challenging, but they are not subjects we can easily ignore. Instead, they are experiences that everyone encounters…On a grander scale, yes, the action takes place on a broader platform, but I truly felt passionate about it, and the response was heartening. As Kevin said from the start, ‘Make it unique, do something special with it.’
