Ever since its debut with the movie “Toy Story” in 1995, Pixar has grown to be one of the largest and most influential animation studios in America. With 11 Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature under its belt, it’s also responsible for creating many iconic Disney properties that significantly contributed to the company’s success. However, the 2010s were somewhat challenging for Pixar, with their first film rated as “Rotten”, specifically “Cars 2,” which received a score of 39% on Rotten Tomatoes.
After the unusual sequel, not all films produced by Pixar managed to retain the immense impact of their earlier works. However, this period in Pixar’s history is significant as it showcases how the studio adapted to this new phase. While many of these films didn’t garner the same level of recognition as their initial releases, they played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s reputation. Some of these films, in particular, truly shine as exceptional examples of storytelling and animation, which has been Pixar’s hallmark since its inception.
This Film Goes Back to Cars’ roots as a Sports Drama
Following the critical disappointment of “Cars 2”, Pixar recognized that their strategy for the series wasn’t effective and it was high time to revert back to the elements that made the original “Cars” unique. As Lightning McQueen crosses paths with the arrogant new racer Jackson Storm, he grapples with the prospect that his racing career might be over. He then meets a young mechanic named Cruz Ramirez who has always idolized Lightning and aspires to race just like him.
In “Cars 3,” Lightning continues his journey, remembering the wisdom and guidance from Doc, aka the Hudson Hornet, that he encountered in the first movie. This film might not be the most intense or heart-wrenching Pixar production, but it’s delightful to observe how these characters evolve. Fresh faces are also brought into the narrative, adding depth to the storyline. However, despite these improvements, “Cars 3” is generally considered the least impressive Pixar film of the 2010s.
A Heartwarming Bond Grounds This Naturalistic Film
Peter Sohn, who later became the director, initially showcased an anxious dinosaur to viewers in his debut feature film, “The Good Dinosaur”. This movie presents a captivating scenario: “What if the asteroid that caused dinosaurs’ extinction had missed Earth?” Consequently, dinosaurs coexist with humans, although such interaction is uncommon. However, when young dinosaur Arlo experiences the tragic loss of his father and becomes stranded from home, he develops a bond with a wild boy named Spot during their journey together.
As Arlo explores lands uncharted to him, he gains insights into duty, bravery, and fortitude amidst frightening circumstances. Despite being a box office disappointment and receiving lower critical acclaim than other Pixar productions at the time, the film was lauded for its exquisitely realistic animation. The movie boasts several breathtaking scenes that underscore the grandeur and allure of the world inhabited by the primary figures.
The Filmmakers Made a Compelling Follow-Up to Finding Nemo
In the deeply emotional movie, “Finding Nemo,” Dory serves as a balancing element, often used for both comedic and heartwarming moments. Her mysterious past and her ongoing battles with memory loss, subtly hinted at without overwhelming the main storyline, provided an excellent foundation for potential future plots. Although another “Finding Nemo” film could be on the horizon, “Finding Dory” effectively concluded the series.
In the movie, Dory gets transported to the Marine Life Institute, where she meets an assortment of unique, eccentric characters who aid her on her significant quest – locating her family. Ellen DeGeneres once again lends her voice to the forgetful but kind-hearted fish named Dory, while Albert Brooks and Andrew Stanton reprise their roles as Marlin and Crish. This follow-up is both funny and emotional, although not quite as powerful as “Finding Nemo.” However, it’s still a worthy sequel that adds depth to the already mesmerizing universe of “Finding Nemo.
The Long-Awaited Sequel Saw the Heroes Face a New Threat
Without a doubt, Pixar’s The Incredibles masterfully blends the worlds of family-centric comedy and action-packed superhero tales. The original film ended on a thrilling edge, with the family embarking on a fresh adventure following an ordinary day out. After a fourteen-year wait, cinema enthusiasts flocked to theaters, excited to witness how this extraordinary family would overcome new challenges. This made Incredibles 2 a highly anticipated sequel.
In the finale of The Incredibles, it’s not the menacing Underminer who takes center stage as the primary antagonist. Instead, that role is filled by the enigmatic Screenslaver, a villain Elastigirl must confront while also working to improve public perception of superheroes once more. Meanwhile, Mr. Incredible shifts his focus to caring for the children at home, a task that becomes increasingly challenging, especially when he discovers that Jack-Jack is developing unique powers of his own. Although not quite as impactful as the original, Incredibles 2 offers impressive action sequences and showcases even more astonishing superpowers.
Seeing Mike and Sully’s Friendship Blossom Tugs at the Heartstrings
Pixar is recognized for pushing boundaries with genres and crafting distinctive, engaging narratives. For a prequel to one of its earliest successes, Monsters Inc., Pixar aimed to explore uncharted territory: a college-themed film. The creative team was tasked with maintaining the conventions of the college genre, all while setting the stage for the events in Monsters Inc. Though it might not necessarily explain the film’s purpose, it offers an entertaining experience nonetheless.
The movie takes us along with Mike and Sully during their adventures at Monsters University, showing us the highs and lows of their friendship while also introducing recurring characters such as Randall. Mike’s individual journey, where he struggles with feelings of rejection by his peers because he’s not scary enough, is both heart-wrenching and inspiring, resonating with viewers who have experienced similar situations in their lives. The new characters are endearing, while the humor, though not quite as strong as the original, promises plenty of chuckles.
Though Some May Think This Sequel Was Unnecessary, it’s Still Endearing
It’s highly probable that Pixar, renowned for its Toy Story franchise, won’t be coming up with fresh escapades for these characters in the near future, but fans are eagerly awaiting the next film in the series. In the latest installment, Toy Story 4, Woody embarked on one of his most heartfelt journeys. He promises to safeguard Bonnie’s homemade toy, Forky, even though Forky keeps insisting he should discard himself.
Later on, he finds himself reconnecting with Bo Peep, his cherished love from the initial Toy Story movie. This encounter undeniably stirs deep feelings within him. He additionally encounters Duke Caboom, a lively character, the amusing duo Ducky and Bunny, and the unsettling Gabby Gabby. The movie, as expected, blends in the classic characters, offering some humorous scenes with Buzz, Buttercup, and the rest of Bonnie’s playthings. While it might not be the strongest film in their repertoire, it nonetheless presents a heartfelt tale about belonging and family, making it an ideal midpoint for the Pixar rankings from the 2010s.
Pixar Imagined the Vivid World of Emotions
Following the launch of two sequels that didn’t quite live up to their initial counterparts, and a daring film that garnered success but wasn’t as iconic as its earlier productions, Pixar changed direction once more, offering a tale that struck a chord with audiences everywhere. Inside Out explores the world of personified emotions and their journey through challenging times while coexisting with the humans whose minds they inhabit.
Describing her mission, this individual solely aims to ensure 11-year-old Riley remains content. However, her task becomes significantly challenging when her parents unexpectedly relocate, compelling Riley to adjust to a novel setting. Witnessing Riley’s progression alongside her feelings results in numerous poignant and inventive instances, demonstrating that the imaginative minds at Pixar continue to master the art of compelling storytelling.
This Film Conflates a Turbulent Mother-Daughter Relationship with Scottish Folklore
The initial “princess movie” produced by Pixar was a remarkable depiction of themes such as self-exploration, bonding within family, and personal fortitude. Unlike other heroines in Pixar’s collection, Merida is characterized by her relentless pursuit of adventure and disregard for her royal responsibilities, causing frequent frustration to her mother, Queen Elinor. In the story, Merida finds a spell from a witch that transforms her mother into a bear. Consequently, Merida and Queen Elinor must put aside their disagreements and collaborate in order to undo the effects of this unusual magic.
The movie is brimming with excitement because it’s set during Medieval times in Scotland. Merida’s fervor for archery and swordplay is thrilling to behold, particularly in numerous perilous, risky scenes that significantly escalate the tension within the film. Not all Pixar enthusiasts are fond of the movie’s narrative shift, as the early previews masterfully concealed the bear plot twist. However, Brave remains a remarkable film that leaves a lasting impression in the Pixar collection.
A Love Letter to the Significance of Dia De Los Muertos
One of Pixar’s most acclaimed films on IMDB, “Coco“, can be considered a contemporary masterpiece suitable for all viewers. The story revolves around a 10-year-old boy named Miguel, who passionately loves music despite his family’s strong opposition to it. His great-grandfather, also a musician, abandoned his wife and young daughter long ago, leading the family to renounce music completely. As a result, Miguel learns and plays in secrecy.
Following a heated argument with his grandmother, he unwittingly finds himself in the realm of the departed where he encounters his deceased kin who refuse to grant him permission to reenter the world of the living unless he vows to forgo playing music ever again. This incident sparks Miguel on a quest through the lively afterlife to locate his legendary grandfather, thus highlighting the profound significance of music. The movie showcases one of the most heart-wrenching scenes in any Pixar production, guaranteed to evoke tears from viewers, and is visually stunning due to its exquisite animation.
Everything That Makes Pixar anIndomitable Force Is Here
Initially, Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and Toy Story 3 were all exceptional films from Pixar. However, Toy Story 3, released in 2010, 15 years after the original, took things to another level by surpassing expectations. The plot revolves around the dilemma faced by the toys when Andy prepares for college, leading them into unforeseen circumstances. An accident causes them to end up at Sunnyside Daycare, where they encounter a diverse array of toys under the leadership of the affectionate and strawberry-scented Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear. Initially, this new environment appears to be a paradise for toys, free from worries about their owner aging. However, as time passes, it becomes clear that Sunnyside is a restrictive and potentially harmful place for the toys.
As a true fan, I can’t help but be awestruck by the intelligence and determination shown by one of Andy’s less vocal toys in Toy Story 3. This film is nothing short of spectacular, boasting outstanding animation, heart-pounding action, plenty of humor that leaves you laughing out loud, and emotional moments that will both tear at your heartstrings and lift your spirits. Kicking off the new decade with a powerful punch, Toy Story 3 undeniably claimed the crown as the finest Pixar movie of the 2010s.
