For years, fans of the popular NBC and Yahoo! Screen sitcom, “Community,” have been eagerly anticipating a movie following the show’s promise of “six seasons and a movie” since Season 2. Finally, in 2022, seven years after the sixth and final season aired on NBC, Peacock confirmed that a film adaptation is indeed in the works. However, the release of the movie has been delayed due to writers’ and actors’ strikes, as well as scheduling conflicts with the busy cast members, but rest assured, “Community” fans, your long-awaited promise will come true soon.
One of the most thrilling aspects I find in the “Community” movie is the comeback of nearly all the principal cast members. With the exception of some characters who left after the fourth season, it’s been confirmed that the rest of the series regulars – Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Donald Glover, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong – will be back. Yet, it’s not just the main characters that make “Community” stand out; I eagerly anticipate the return of these ten supporting characters along with our beloved series leads.
He’s Like if God Spilled a Person
Garrett Lambert is not particularly organized, even compared to other students at Greendale. His frequent bouts of ineptitude have turned him into a regular target for jokes on the show Community. Despite this, he occasionally contributes humorous one-liners or background gags to the group’s antics.

It turns out that Garrett gets the most attention when he invites his study group to his wedding, but they later find out it’s actually his cousin he’s marrying. Given this, it would be wise to check up on him to see if his marriage has endured or if his next family gathering is going to be extremely uncomfortable.
Which Annie Has Had it Better Since the Series Finale?
In “Community” Season 3, the highly competitive Annie Edison encountered her equal in the form of Annie Kim during the episode “Geography of Global Conflict.” Being equally intelligent and driven achievers, it was inevitable that they would clash. Every time Annie Kim appears on “Community,” Annie Edison comically breaks down. In fact, when Annie Edison leaves the play adaptation of “The Karate Kid” in Season 6, she is replaced by Annie Kim, creating an amusing situation.

In a twist that hinted at a bright future for one Annie (Edison), the finale of our beloved series saw her landing an internship with the F.B.I. But imagine the comedic chaos if we were to see the reaction of the other Annie (Kim) whose future appears even more radiant! This could revive their long-standing rivalry from the days of ‘Community’, offering plenty of laugh-out-loud moments in the upcoming film.
Greendale’s Greatest Enemy, and Their Leader, Could Unleash Havoc for the Movie
Each college has its longstanding rival: Harvard and Yale often butt heads, Michigan harbors disdain for Ohio State, and Dean Spreck of City College consistently irks Dean Pelton at Greendale Community College. This rivalry between the two institutions is vividly portrayed in the television show Community. Starting from Season 2, Dean Spreck’s hatred for Greendale was so profound that he devised a scheme to establish an ice cream company merely as a ploy to lure Greendale students into playing paintball and unknowingly damaging their own campus. Now that shows true dedication.

If there’s a need for a villain in the Community movie, City College fits the bill perfectly. Their interference could potentially threaten Greendale, causing the characters to return to school after so many years. The appearance of City College in the movie might also lead to another paintball scene, a classic Community element, with Dean Spreck cackling maliciously from a secure location.
Hey, His Name is Alex!
Alex “Stars-Shaven” Osborne got his somewhat derisive nickname by trimming his sideburns into star designs. Similar to Garrett, he’s often seen meandering in the background of Community episodes, seldom getting much attention, even as he discreetly deals drugs on the sly. Notably, Star-Burns played a significant role in the overall plot by staging his own death in Season 3, followed by resurfacing again in Season 5.

The comeback of Star-Burns in the Community film would evoke a sense of familiarity and nostalgia, as if fans were once again settling in for the show’s grand finale. Known for his eccentric hairdo, Star-Burns is instantly recognizable, and just catching a glimpse of those stars could whisk viewers straight back into the quirky universe of Greendale.
The Character That Helped Begin the Series Should be There When it Ends
In the Community pilot episode, Professor Ian Duncan appears quite frequently, leading new viewers to presume he might be a regular character in future episodes. However, John Oliver’s character is actually an old acquaintance of Jeff’s who owes him a favor. At first, Jeff requests all test answers from Duncan for his courses. Unbeknownst to Jeff, the answers are false. This allows Jeff to falsely present himself as a Spanish tutor, thereby indirectly helping establish the study group. Following the pilot, Professor Duncan continues to make guest appearances, particularly after Pierce and Troy depart in Season 5.

“As a movie reviewer, I believe it’s fitting for Duncan to return for the finale, wrapping up Community with the same touch that started it all. His unexpected exit in Season 5 left many questions unanswered, and it’s only fair that he gets the resolution he deserves along with the rest of the cast. Moreover, having him back would undoubtedly add more laughter to the mix.”
His Grizzled Attitude Could be Just What the Community Movie Needs
Once it was evident that Chevy Chase wouldn’t be back for Season 5 of Community, the creative team devised a replacement character: Professor Buzz Hickey. Unlike Pierce, who was a dull-witted, irritating heir known for putting his foot in his mouth, Hickey was a hard-boiled ex-cop with a no-nonsense demeanor. Despite only appearing for one season before leaving off-screen, Hickey left an impact, particularly when he allowed the study group to rebuild their relationship with his estranged son.

Following the Season 5 finale of Community, Hickey’s presence was scarcely mentioned throughout the subsequent seasons. Although Abed does reference an artist-cum-former cop in Season 6, for all practical purposes, Hickey effectively vanished from the show. A cameo in the movie could help soften the abruptness of his departure and make the second half of Season 5 feel more integrated with the rest of the series.
Jeff’s First Major Girlfriend Seemed to Vanish
As a dedicated movie buff, I must say that the first season of Community swiftly painted Jeff as a superficial ladies’ man who found it challenging to perceive women as individuals worthy of genuine connection. The idea of him committing to Professor Michelle Slater seemed like an enormous leap for his character. Slater, with her knack for humorously applying statistics to quantify the ‘hotness’ of their relationship, certainly left a lasting impression during Season 1. Although their relationship didn’t last long, Slater played a pivotal role in shaping the essence of the show’s initial season.

Following the Season 1 finale, Slater and Britta both express their feelings for Jeff. However, Slater mysteriously vanishes without a trace, much like Hickey. The show, Community, never clarifies why Slater left, although it had five more seasons to do so. If Slater returns for the movie, it would be a nod to the series’ origins, offer explanations, and explore their relationship with Jeff since they might have been working together at Greendale throughout these years.
She was a Humble Outsider who Came in and Nailed It
As Season 6 commenced, Pierce, Troy, Shirley, Hickey, and Duncan had all departed the show permanently. To prevent the cast from becoming too small, two new characters were introduced in the final season of Community. The first was Frankie Dart, who came on board as a consultant and soon aligned with the Greendale Taskforce (Save Greendale Committee). Her unyielding demeanor, high level of professionalism, and subtle disdain for the Dean’s behavior quickly made her a memorable character throughout Season 6.

Despite Frankie having a brief stint on the show, her persistence saw her through until the very end. By the time the series came to its conclusion, Frankie had become an integral part of the main cast, sharing screen time with characters like Jeff, Britta, Chang, and the Dean in Britta’s bar during the finale. Given that she’s there for their farewell, it would be incongruous to exclude Frankie from the Community movie, as she deserves a fitting conclusion alongside the main cast.
Now There’s a man who Knows how to Make Fans Laugh!
Alongside Frankie, Season 6 of “Community” introduced another character who took over the IT position at Greendale: Elroy Patashnik. An eccentric scientific genius, Elroy effortlessly blended in with the study group, effectively replacing Pierce’s role as the out-of-touch elder, while also showcasing his unique humor that made it seem as if he was a long-standing member of the Community cast from the start.

Episode Count | 12 |
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a sense of disappointment similar to Frankie’s when Elroy exits just as the final episode is heating up. He promises a reunion, only to swiftly retract it. Yet, there remains a flicker of hope among fans for one last appearance from Elroy. If he were to return in the upcoming movie, it would be a fantastic opportunity for him to connect with the main cast once more and interact with characters who left the show before Elroy even made his debut – interactions we’ve never seen before!
Could Community’s Greatest Mystery Finally be Solved?
The real identity of the infamous Pant-Quarter Thief remains a secret to all. This enigmatic figure would slip coins into the trousers of unaware Greendale students and staff members without their knowledge. In one of Community’s most nerve-wracking episodes, titled “Basic Coin in Crackology,” the Save Greendale Task Force embarks on a manhunt for the thief. However, just like Community, it never discloses the identity of the Pant-Quarter Thief.

Although the showrunner hasn’t revealed who the Ass Crack Bandit really is, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the enigma can’t be unraveled. Fans have speculated that characters such as Annie, Abed, Britta, or Duncan might be behind the mask, with some even proposing a joint effort. If the Community movie manages to crack this series’ biggest mystery, it would undoubtedly give the sense of a satisfying ending to the study group’s narrative.
