Rock isn’t entirely extinct just yet. While it may seem that way, rock music has a tendency to ebb and flow – taking periods of rest only to burst back with renewed intensity. So, while rock may appear to be asleep now, it’s certainly not completely dead.
I’d like to express my appreciation to Tobias Forge and Ghost for their work. Although some people might argue against classifying Ghost as a metal band, there’s no denying they produce hard rock music, much like Rush was never heavy metal but certainly wasn’t pop-rock either. Any debate suggesting that Ghost isn’t hard rock seems unfounded.
To put it simply, it seems that Forge and his team focus primarily on producing quality music rather than adhering to specific label expectations. At first, Ghost was seen as an oddity or niche act, but once the world recognized their exceptional music, they gained widespread acclaim.
Ghost reaches number one on Billboard album charts
In the U.S., one of the most telling signs of a band’s popularity among the general public is the weekly album charts. According to Billboard, as of May 10th, when the new rankings are released, Ghost’s latest album, “Skeletá“, will be number one on the chart.
In this case, Ghost becomes the initial hard rock act to grace the Billboard 200 summit since AC/DC, and their album “Power Up” takes the lead position. This will mark Ghost’s debut atop the album charts since they started releasing albums in 2010.
Vinyl sales significantly increased the success of the album, with Skeletá selling a whopping 44,000 vinyl records in its first week, marking the highest number since 1991 for any hard rock group, and placing it as the third-highest among all rock acts during that period. Only blink-182’s One More Time (with 49,000 sales in 2023) and boygenius’ The Record (with 45,000 sales in 2023) saw greater success.
