’28 Weeks Later’ Is Streaming Free on Tubi Just in Time for ’28 Years Later’ Sequel

Starting soon, you can stream the free sequel to Danny Boyle’s revolutionary zombie film, “28 Days Later,” titled “28 Weeks Later.” This movie, featuring Jeremy Renner, has recently been added to Tubi’s collection. This means that viewers can enjoy the movie without any charge, though there may be a few brief ads during the movie playback. With the anticipation growing for Danny Boyle’s upcoming release, “28 Years Later,” the third installment of the franchise, slated for June 20, 2025, “28 Weeks Later” arrives at an ideal time for fans of the series.

28 Weeks Later, helmed by Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, serves as a continuation from the first movie, yet it features no characters from 28 Days Later. Instead, the narrative revolves around two siblings, Don and Tammy, who meet their father, Andy, in District One – a region of re-populated Great Britain. However, unlike their mother, Alice, who they later find, Don wasn’t able to save her; instead, he abandoned her by choosing to leave. As the story unfolds, it is revealed that Alice carries a gene that could potentially lead to a cure. Unfortunately, Don contracts the infection from Alice, which causes District One to become the epicenter of another outbreak. Sergeant Doyle, in an effort to help, decides to aid the children’s escape as they too may possess the gene for the vaccine, according to the official movie plot summary.

After six months since the outbreak of the fury virus in Great Britain, the U.S. military assists in establishing a protected zone within London for the remaining survivors to rebuild and restart their lives. However, things don’t always go as anticipated.

28 Weeks Later initially had a limited run in cinemas, but managed to rake in over $65 million from a budget of just $15 million. Critics appreciated it, as evidenced by its 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – quite impressive for a horror sequel. Its cast includes Jeremy Renner, Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Imogen Poots, Mackintosh Muggleton, Harold Perrineau, and Idris Elba, among others. The film’s success led to discussions about another sequel, but the project got stuck in development limbo for years. It wasn’t until 2024 that a third movie was officially confirmed.

’28 Weeks Later’ Is One of the Most Underrated Horror Sequels of the 21st Century

While 28 Weeks Later is indeed a continuation of the initial movie, it significantly departs from the storytelling techniques Danny Boyle employed effectively in the first film. Gone is the sense of intimacy and personal crisis portrayal; instead, it delivers an action-packed horror experience. This shift doesn’t equate to a poor quality film. Quite the contrary, it offers a pulse-pounding sequel to the zombie genre, masterfully crafted with intricate set pieces that truly deliver. Unlike its predecessor, which revolutionized the way audiences perceived fast and aggressive zombies, this film presents a unique take on the genre.

In contrast to its less recognized follow-up, the sequel to 28 Days Later expands its horizons significantly. Unlike in 28 Days Later, where we only glimpse the extent of the outbreak within London, 28 Weeks Later showcases a world seemingly destroyed beyond the city limits. Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo intended to create a different film from its predecessor, not just a rehash. His portrayal of the zombie apocalypse includes furious carnivores, but it leans more towards traditional storytelling with authorities trying to restore order and save humanity. The intriguing dilemma is whether they truly managed to save the world, an answer we’ll uncover next June.
