Ragtime will be back on Broadway this fall.
The revival of the musical “Ragtime” at the New York City Center Gala will begin performances at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater starting from September 26th. Joshua Henry, Caissie Levy, and Brandon Uranowitz will re-emerge in their roles for this production, having previously been involved in the fall 2024 production of “Ragtime” at New York City Center.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to be part of the first show of the season, which is being helmed by our new Lincoln Center Artistic Director, Lear deBessonet. This time around, she’s taking the director’s chair for this revival, having previously served as the artistic director at City Center’s Encores! during the fall production. Notably, she directed Into the Woods at City Center, a production that later graced Broadway stages.
The upcoming musical production, penned by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens for the score, Terrence McNally for the script, is set to debut on October 16 and run until January 4. Drawing inspiration from E.L. Doctorow’s novel, this show chronicles the journey of three families in the early 1900s as they strive to achieve the American dream. Among them are a talented Black pianist named Coalhouse Walker Jr., portrayed by Henry, his girlfriend Sarah, a Jewish immigrant Tateh (Uranowitz) and his daughter, and a wealthy white family headed by Mother (Levy).
The musical “Ragtime” initially played on Broadway from 1998 to 2000, and later returned for a Broadway revival, running from 2009 to 2010.
As a gamer, I might put it like this: “I’ve had the privilege of gracing the Broadway stage in some incredible productions. I played Billy Bigelow in the latest revival of ‘Carousel’, stepped into the woods as Henry in ‘Into the Woods’, danced my way through ‘Shuffle Along’, and originated the role of Sheila in the recent revival of ‘Hair’. I’ve also had the honor to be part of the cast for ‘Frozen’, ‘Caroline, or Change (revival)’, and ‘Leopoldstadt’, where I acted opposite Uranowitz. Interestingly enough, Uranowitz is a Tony Award winner for his role in ‘Leopoldstadt’ and has made appearances on Broadway in ‘Falsettos’, ‘An American in Paris’, and more.
The full lineup of actors will be revealed at a future time. The play “Ragtime” is being co-produced by Lincoln Center Theater, along with Tom Kirdahy, Kevin Ryan, and Robert Greenblatt.
Beyond deBessonet, the upcoming season at Lincoln Center Theater will be overseen by a fresh executive team, which includes Managing Director Mike Schleifer, Executive Producer Bartlett Sher, Producer Nicole Kastrinos, Executive Director of Development and Planning Naomi Grabel, and LCT3 Artistic Director and Producer Maria Manuela Goyane.
