This year’s theme for the Met Gala was intriguing – Black Dandyism – and there weren’t any specific guidelines provided in the invitation. As a result, attendees had to figure out for themselves what this meant when they walked the red carpet. And wow, some of them certainly interpreted it in unique ways as they ascended the Met’s 154-foot staircase, leaving many viewers speechless with their stunning ensembles.
It seemed as though Anna Wintour might have covertly organized a group chat (though Jeffrey Goldberg may hold different information), as the attire appeared to adhere to distinct motifs. Numerous women donned shimmering hairstyles reminiscent of Josephine Baker’s marcel waves, while many men wore shiny hair, complete with top hats and tails that flowed like bridal trains behind them. The crowd was bedecked with an assortment of accessories, including one conspicuously resembling a large garbage bag.
Below, the wildest (some might say weirdest) trends of the 2025 Met Gala….
In the world of TALONS & TAILORING, claws were indeed out, but not in a threatening sense. Cynthia Erivo spent two whole days perfecting her acrylic nails, while Ego Nwodim accessorized her button-themed manicure to match her jacket. Sabrina Carpenter opted for “LV” logos on hers, and Lizzo chose tuxedo-style nail art that complemented her Siriano mermaid gown. Dwyane Wade and Chappell Roan both embraced neon shades. It appears that the era of maximalist nail art is upon us!
HAIR STYLING TRENDS Marcel waves were nearly essential. Sydney Sweeney, Quinta Brunson, Serena Williams, Lana Del Rey and Dua Lipa opted for sleek, Josephine Baker-inspired waves and kiss curls. However, some celebrities bucked the trend: Natasha Lyonne and Ciara sported impressive hair sculptures. Anne Hathaway went tall with a towering ponytail; Miley Cyrus showcased a sculptural braid. Lizzo, on the other hand, took inspiration from Marilyn Monroe with platinum curls reminiscent of pin-ups.
As a fashion enthusiast, I’ve got to say, Andre 3000 turned heads with his extraordinary piano backpack and, you bet, a trash bag! Olivier Rousteing carried a sewing machine, literally! Madonna added a touch of sophistication with her lit cigar. Teyana Taylor and Ruth E. Carter collaborated on an impressive towering red hat, while Mary J. Blige donned Stephen Jones’ gleaming bone headpiece. Bad Bunny stood out in his bejeweled gloves and balloon-like Prada bag. The creativity at the Met Gala was truly off the charts!
DRAMATIC COATS AND CAPES Stunning outerwear garnered attention on the red carpet. Ciara donned a voluminous pink puffer dress. Alicia Keys accessorized with a quilted wrap. Tracee Ellis Ross opted for a Marc Jacobs jumpsuit and a matching hat, adding volume to her look. Diana Ross’ Ugo Mozie cape was almost cosmic in scale. Rihanna, expecting again, chose a Marc Jacobs corset suit featuring an oversized back bow and showcasing her baby bump.
STYLISH OUTDOOR WEAR Grabbed the spotlight on the red carpet were dramatic outerwear choices. Ciara went for a pink puffer dress, while Alicia Keys paired a quilted wrap with her ensemble. Tracee Ellis Ross opted for a Marc Jacobs jumpsuit and matching hat to add volume to her look. Diana Ross’ Ugo Mozie cape was almost otherworldly in size. Rihanna, expecting again, selected a Marc Jacobs corset suit complete with an oversized back bow and prominently displaying her baby bump.
Adorned, Sparkling, and Perplexed: Pearls and beads were abundant in every corner. Pharrell donned a Louis Vuitton tuxedo studded with pearls. Ayo Edebiri’s Ferragamo shirtdress glistened with ruby-hued beads. Demi Moore’s Thom Browne “tie dress” was intricately embroidered with 1.4 million beads. One unfortunate mishap, and someone might have tumbled down the Met steps.
A WIDE VARIETY OF HATS A multitude of hats were present: adorned crowns, veils, top hats, even headpieces resembling neckties like Demi Moore’s. Regina King, Lewis Hamilton, Zendaya and Teyana Taylor all opted for unconventional headwear. Not a single head was left uncovered.
SKIN STILL MADE AN APPEARANCE Even though the focus was on tailoring, skin managed to make occasional appearances. Sydney Sweeney and Kylie Jenner revealed ample cleavage. Kerry Washington displayed visible underwear lines. Lorde donned a shimmery grey bra top paired with a Thom Browne suit. Sabrina Carpenter and Hailey Bieber opted for full bodysuits, seemingly forgetting about pants altogether.
Dramatic Transformation Damson Idris, the shining star of F1, captivated everyone with his Tommy Hilfiger racing suit adorned with sequins and a helmet that metamorphosed into a striking red three-piece suit. Colman Domingo also amazed us as he performed a swift transformation, switching from a stylish checkerboard look to a massive blue cap embellished with an oversized gold clerical collar.
MOST DRASTIC TRANSFORMATION: Walton Goggins, the unanticipated style surprise of the latest season of White Lotus, appeared in a reversed Thom Browne skirt suit and lengthy duster coat. A shot in the dark? Possibly. But kudos for attempting something bold.
