When Diljit Dosanjh didn’t have a manager to discuss Udta Punjab on his behalf, here’s how he bagged the crime drama

Diljit Dosanjh is swiftly gaining fame as one of India’s rising global stars. Known initially for his successful career as a Punjabi singer and actor, he has since earned widespread admiration for his talent across the nation. Yet, it might surprise you to learn that when he was offered his first Bollywood film role in Udta Punjab, Diljit didn’t have a manager guiding him.

2022 saw Diljit sharing during an interview with Film Companion that when he was offered Udta Punjab, he didn’t have a manager yet. He humorously mentioned that when the filmmakers called, he was asked to send his manager for discussions but, “I didn’t have one,” he said.

When asked if he had informed the creators about not having a manager or hiring one the following day, Diljit mentioned that he asked his current manager and former friend Sonali Singh to visit them as a favor. Looking back on his modest origins, the singer-actor stated that his career took off by performing at weddings, so he never turns down any opportunity.

He knew Sonali and requested her to meet the producers to solidify the movie deal. He explained, “I need to do this film, so please avoid discussing any topics that might jeopardize the opportunity. This is my first Hindi film, so I don’t want any acting fees.” To ensure she said exactly what he wanted, he made her memorize all the lines and even verified with her once she returned.

2016 saw the release of Udta Punjab, a crime drama featuring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, and Diljit Dosanjh. This film, under the direction of Abhishek Chaubey, became one of the most debated movies of that year.
