Catholic Cardinals Consulted ‘Conclave’ Film Ahead of Ongoing Vote for Next Pope

Before the 2025 papal election to choose Pope Francis’ successor, it appears that some Catholic cardinals may have taken inspiration from Edward Berger’s 2024 political thriller with the same title.

As reported by Politico, some cardinals involved in the current conclave in Rome found the TV show “Conclave” useful for gaining additional insights into the procedure of choosing a new Pope.

A clergyman mentioned to Politico that some people have viewed the movie ‘Conclave’ in theaters, and the publication notes that it is considered surprisingly authentic by cardinals themselves. The film has been particularly helpful at a point when many participants in the conclave have limited understanding of Vatican politics and etiquette.

In the movie “Conclave,” based on Robert Harris’ novel, Ralph Fiennes portrays Cardinal Thomas Lawrence who assumes leadership of the College of Cardinals following the demise of their Pope due to a heart attack. The story unfolds within three days at the Vatican in Italy, where Fiennes’s character Lawrence delves into and exposes scandals implicating possible candidates for the papacy.

Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff, passed away on April 21 following a stroke that resulted in heart failure. This upcoming conclave in 2025 marks the first since his election in 2017, which took place after two days of voting. The cardinals initiated the selection process on Wednesday but were unable to choose a new Pope on the first day.

2025 saw the suspenseful film “Conclave” receive one Oscar win in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay, penned by Peter Straughan. Earlier this year, the same movie garnered eight nominations, among them nods for supporting actress, leading actor, and the esteemed categories of best picture.

Previously, Hollywood has depicted the Vatican on the big screen, with the 2019 film The Two Popes being one such instance. This movie traced the story of Pope Francis’ rise to power (played by Jonathan Pryce), and received three Oscar nominations, including a nod for Pryce for his portrayal of Francis.

In a review for “Conclave” published by The Hollywood Reporter, Stephen Farber stated that as power struggles escalate in the movie, a nun portrayed by Isabella Rossellini assumes a crucial part in contesting the dominant male authority within the Catholic Church. The film tackles contemporary topics such as sexual and racial biases inside religious institutions, while also shedding light on the sexual misconduct scandals that have affected the Church recently.
