The Rising Stars of Focus Shine at Frieze New York 2025

2025’s awaited Frieze New York during Art Week in New York is here! This year’s event, taking place at The Shed until May 11, unites a diverse selection of 67 galleries hailing from more than 25 countries. From established blue-chip giants to the budding contemporary artists of tomorrow, there’s something for everyone at this art fair!

The main focus is drawing plenty of attention with its largest edition to date, curated by Lumi Tan, who previously served as the curatorial director for Luna Luna’s comeback. This section primarily caters to younger galleries and up-and-coming artists, showcasing a significant change towards international artists, debut participants, and collaborations between artists and their galleries.

This year, Focus features a comeback of video art with an intriguing blend of technology and compassion. The installation “CLICK TO ENTER” by Danielle Braithwaithe-Shirley graces Public Gallery in Berlin. Known for her immersive exhibits at Berghain last summer, Braithwaithe-Shirley combines video games, sound, performance, sculpture, and drawing to shed light on the Black trans experience. Her work emphasizes concepts of care, empathy, and responsibility by prompting viewers to reconsider their biases.

Additionally, G Gallery’s exhibition titled “The Bewitched Surfers and the Holy Barnacles” by South Korean artist Yehwan Song is causing quite a stir. By utilizing a network of small cardboard screens, Song examines how the internet influences identity formation within algorithmic echo chambers. Her work presents a unique perspective on digital discussions with its low-fi yet high-concept approach.

Simultaneously, Citra Sasmita paves new paths with Yeo Workshop, becoming the first Southeast Asian gallery to exhibit in this section. The unique “Vortex in the Land of Liberation” work revitalizes traditional Balinese painting styles to emphasize stories previously overlooked and centered around women. Hanging from above, the piece combines antique fabrics, beads, and cowhide paintings, drawing inspiration from Balinese spiritual beliefs and a profound connection to nature.

Tickets and program details are available on the fair’s website.
