Because the second season of Elsbeth ran longer, it allowed the show to deepen its central mystery by delving into Elsbeth’s past in Chicago and her clash with Judge Crawford, a key subplot that was gradually revealed across multiple episodes. Meanwhile, Kaya Blanke’s progression towards becoming a detective, a plotline that had been established since the start of the series, continued. However, after Kaya’s promotion, her screen time decreased significantly as Elsbeth worked with various police officers and detectives instead. This narrative choice was intended to set up Kaya’s eventual departure from the precinct to join a task force, which coincided with Carra Patterson leaving the show as a regular character.
Carra Patterson’s portrayal of Kaya Blanke significantly enriched the series with her delightful performance, particularly her on-screen chemistry with Carrie Preston which made the relationship between Kaya and Elsbeth feel genuine. This dynamic was instrumental in giving the show a heart through friendship. Although it has been confirmed that Kaya will return as a guest star in season three to reconnect with Elsbeth, the weekly encounters between these two characters will be sorely missed.
In case some or all of the officers who have been working alongside Elsbeth take on larger roles in the show, then the way season two integrated those characters throughout the episodes was commendable. This gradual exposure allowed viewers to become accustomed to their presence.
Kaya’s departure from her series regular role in “Ramen Holiday” put a strong emphasis on Elsbeth and Kaya’s friendship within the episode, as Kaya worried that she might not get another chance to see Elsbeth before she moved on to a new job.
If not otherwise, Elsbeth wholeheartedly adopted the concept of wrapping things up neatly in “Ramen Holiday.” There are no unresolved issues or suspenseful cliffhangers, and truth be told, it could have served as a satisfying finale had the series stopped there. Elsbeth interacts with several of the criminals she had previously incarcerated, and her role also includes resolving another murder case. The season finale is a cheerful occasion, despite taking place primarily within a prison, as the show maintains its comedic tone by incorporating a musical number reminiscent of “Chicago.” Elsbeth skillfully utilizes the numerous guest stars from across two seasons by bringing many of them under one roof, as “Ramen Holiday” presents a range of characters that keep the narrative intriguing while Elsbeth solves the season’s final case before her impending release.
Title “Ramen Break” signals a moment of relaxation for viewers as the show moves into its third installment. Unlike previous seasons, no nail-biting cliffhanger is left hanging, allowing characters’ fates to be decided freely. In this heartwarming finale, Elsbeth commemorates the friendships forged and prepares everyone for the adventures, whether shared or solo, that are coming up next. The season ender offers a satisfying mix of joy and emotion, wrapping up certain plotlines while also hinting at fresh mysteries, characters, and story arcs in the forthcoming third season. In its second run, Elsbeth continued to shine as an entertaining blend of humor, suspense, and captivating mystery, promising even more intrigue with the arrival of new puzzles, personalities, and narratives for the overall storyline in the upcoming third chapter.
