As a connoisseur of lifestyle trends, I must say that the vibrant realm of Indian cinema constantly welcomes fresh faces each year. However, it takes more than just a debut to carve out a significant space in Bollywood, and even rarer still is the transformation into a shining star. One such exceptional individual who has left an indelible mark on this industry for decades is none other than the venerable Dimple Kapadia. After her marriage to the legendary Rajesh Khanna, she gracefully stepped away from the limelight, but her impact remains undiminished even today.
As a young, impressionable teenager, Dimple Kapadia found herself discovered by the legendary Bollywood figure Raj Kapoor. This serendipitous encounter led to her casting in the 1973 romantic musical film Bobby, which ultimately proved to be a massive commercial triumph. Following the unprecedented success of her debut movie, Kapadia found herself inundated with numerous acting prospects.
After marrying Rajesh Khanna in 1973, she chose to leave the acting world behind. Yet, following their separation in 1984, fans’ requests brought her back to the silver screen and were met with warm receptions. With roles in films like Prahaar, Angaar, Gardish, Krantiveer, and others, she managed to win over many admirers. Grateful for these opportunities, she also accepted roles from the South Indian film industry.
Movies such as Kaash, Insaniyat Ke Dushman, Insaaf, Zakhmi Aurat, Ram Lakhan, Drishti, and Lekin earned her critical recognition, culminating in the National Film Award for Best Actress with Rudaali. Additionally, she featured in Antareen, a film produced in Bengali. In 2001, she appeared alongside Akshaye Khanna as his love interest in Dil Chahta Hai, where Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khan also starred.
The leading actress has appeared alongside Salman Khan in both Dabangg and Dabangg 3, as well as with her daughter’s husband Akshay Kumar in Patiala House. She also worked with Deepika Padukone in Cocktail, Naseeruddin Shah and Arjun Kapoor in Finding Fanny, Irrfan Khan in Angrezi Medium, among others. Following her success in Bollywood, she made an appearance in the American sci-fi film Tenet, directed by Christopher Nolan.
Over the past few years, she’s graced the silver screen with appearances in films such as A Thursday, Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva, Pathaan, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, and Murder Mubarak. Furthermore, she’s made a significant impact on streaming platforms with her acting talents in shows like Tandav and the 2023 crime-drama TV series titled Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo.
In terms of her family life, Dimple serves as a loving mother to authors Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna, and she holds the title of grandmother for Naomika Saran.
