Johnny Rodriguez, the celebrated Hispanic country musician best remembered for his song “That’s the Way Love Goes,” has sadly passed away at the age of 73.
Rodriguez’s daughter, Aubry Rodriguez, announced his death on social media on Friday.
In a heartfelt Instagram message, she acknowledged that her father was not just a renowned musician whose talent moved millions globally, but also a cherished husband, father, uncle, and brother. His kindness, humor, and compassion significantly influenced everyone fortunate enough to know him. We’re profoundly thankful for the affectionate tributes and condolences from admirers, peers, and friends as we navigate this period of sorrow.
Though we’ve just bid farewell to an extraordinary artist, we’ve lost someone truly unique and indispensable – a loss that leaves us all grieving. At this difficult time, I ask for understanding and respect as we walk through this painful journey side by side.
Rodriguez was among the early Hispanic artists to make a mark in country music. He found his success shortly after relocating to Nashville at the age of 21, securing a contract with Mercury Records. His debut single under this label, “Pass Me By (If You’re Only Passing Through)” released in 1972, peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
1973 marked the first time one of his songs, “You Always Come Back to Hurting Me,” reached No. 1 on the country charts for him. Additionally, another one of his tracks, “Ridin’ My Thumb to Mexico,” also climbed to No. 1 on the same chart later that year.
Johnny Rodriguez’s first album, titled “Introducing Johnny Rodriguez“, peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart in 1973. In the same year, he was awarded as the most promising vocalist at the Academy of Country Music Awards, and his song “Pass Me By” was nominated for single record of the year.
In all, he boasted six number one hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Among them were “That’s the Way Love Goes,” “I Just Can’t Stop Thinking About Her,” “Just Get Up and Close the Door,” and “Love Made a Melody in My Heart.
Later on, he joined forces with Epic Records in the year 1979, collaborating closely with producer Billy Sherrill. In recognition of his musical contributions, he was enshrined in the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
Survivors include his daughter, Aubry, whom Rodriguez shared with his ex-wife, Debbie McNeely.
