Over the past weekend, Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts ruled the domestic box office, taking in approximately $33.1 million. This brings their 10-day total earnings within North America to $128.5 million, while globally they have made a grand sum of $272.2 million.
The movie starring Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan, known as Thunderbolts or alternatively as The New Avengers, experienced a moderate decrease of about 55% from its initial weekend, which is less than the typical 57% drop for Marvel Cinematic Universe films. This action-packed production has garnered positive reviews and high audience ratings.
Under the guidance of Jake Schreier, this movie unites an eclectic group of misfits – less popular comic book personas – who unexpectedly find their heroic capabilities when they collaborate. Alongside Pugh (Yelena Belova) and Stan (Bucky Barnes), the film showcases Wyatt Russell as John Walker, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Lewis Pullman as Bob, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as CIA director Valentine Allegra de Fontaine.
With no new event pic on the marquee, the weekend belonged to holdovers all the way around.
Warner Bros. had much to rejoice over: Ryan Coogler’s underdog film, titled “Sinners,” surpassed the $200 million milestone at the domestic box office, bringing its worldwide earnings close to a staggering $300 million. To add another feather to their cap, a Minecraft movie raked in over $900 million in global ticket sales.
In its fourth weekend, the movie “Sinners” finished in second place with a substantial $21.1 million earnings in North America, bringing its total to $214.9 million. Worldwide, it has grossed an impressive $283.3 million. The supernatural vampire film, starring Michael B. Jordan, continues Coolger’s string of successes. Coolger is the daring and innovative director behind the Black Panther and Creed series, and Jordan has appeared in all five of his films to date.
The “Minecraft Film” ranks third, generating $8 million during its sixth week, pushing its domestic earnings to $409 million and worldwide revenue to $909.6 million – making it the third highest-grossing video adaptation of all time (unadjusted for inflation), trailing only Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
In its fourth week, The Accountant 2, produced by Amazon MGM Studios, ranked fourth at the box office, earning $6.1 million, bringing its domestic total to a strong $50.9 million.
In a group of modest films aiming to boost sales, IFC’s horror movie titled “Clown in the Cornfield” showed the strongest performance, earning $3.7 million on its opening weekend, which placed it among the top five earners. Meanwhile, both “Shadow Force” from Lionsgate and “Fight or Flight” by Vertical Entertainment debuted with around $2 million each. The exact order of their earnings will be determined on Monday morning when final weekend grosses are calculated.
Flight or Flight also debuted on premium VOD over the weekend.
Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s chief box office analyst, remarks that this tranquil weekend is a prelude to a significant surge in movies, hinting at releases such as ‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’, ‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’, ‘Lilo & Stitch’, and ‘Karate Kid: Legends’. He predicts that May will be an extraordinary month for movie theaters.
More to come.
