Starting this coming Friday, June 6th, a fresh book from Insight Editions will be available for purchase, offering an exclusive look at the enchanting filmmaking process that breathed life into the magnificent, Viking-rich Isle of Berk as seen in the latest movie.

We’re giving you a sneak peek at our reptilian project with exclusive insights into the shooting spots, costumes, and creative direction. DeBlois has been part of the popular DreamWorks series before, directing all three animated versions. Alongside writing and directing duties, he also holds executive producer roles alongside David Cain, Chris Sanders (co-writer and director of the 2010 original), Doug Davison, Roy Lee, and Michael Connolly.

In one of the pages, producer Marc Platt, known for hit productions like “Wicked,” explains why Dean was the ideal choice for the live-action adaptation of “HTTYD.” He wasn’t just qualified because he made the original animated movie and its sequels, and directed all three, but because he deeply identifies with this universe and its characters. There’s something about Dean that mirrors Hiccup, suggests Platt. Through his life experiences, Dean has evolved into a person who truly grasps Hiccup’s character, his psychology, and behavior. This understanding is crucial when pairing a storyteller or filmmaker with material.

What is How to Train Your Dragon about?

In the spirit of its 2010 forerunner, which was based on Cressida Cowell’s children’s book series, the movie “How to Train Your Dragon” tells a story about a shy Viking boy named Hiccup (Mason Thames from “The Black Phone”). Set on the fictional island of Berk, this tale unfolds in a world where Vikings and dragons have been at odds for centuries. However, Hiccup challenges the norm when he develops a friendship with a Night Fury dragon, which he affectionately calls “Toothless,” one of the most feared dragon species.

The ensemble includes Gerard Butler (returning as Stoick, Hiccup’s chieftain father from the animated movies), Nico Parker playing Astrid, Nick Frost as Gobber, Gabriell Howell portraying Snotlout, Julian Dennison in the role of Fishlegs, Browyn James as Ruffnut, Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut, Peter Serafinowicz as Spitelout, Ruth Codd as Phlegma, and Murray McArthur depicting Hoark.
