We’re Building the Damn House

On Saturday evening, the Gold Gala, an annual event that celebrates influential figures in Asian Pacific entertainment and culture, made its comeback in downtown Los Angeles.

A prestigious dinner event took place at the Jerry Moss Plaza of the Music Center, graced by many notable figures on a balmy night. It offered delectable dishes created by James Beard Award-winning chef Lord Maynard Llera, mesmerizing performances such as one by honoree Laufey, and a sense of camaraderie within the community.

The evening began with Daniel Dae Kim setting the scene, emphasizing the primary focus: Gold House’s A100 list, an annual recognition for the most culturally influential Asian Pacific figures in diverse industries. Jon M. Chu was the first recipient of the night, receiving the A1 in Entertainment Award from Janet Yang, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Harry Shum Jr., and musician Hayley Kiyoko.

Some directors create movies and others create art. But there are a select few who manage to do both – taking us on extraordinary journeys to realms we’ve never dreamed of while touching upon the deepest, most intimate aspects of our humanity. Jon M. Chu is one such director,” was what Yang said to the audience.

Jon, I’ve been following your journey since your time at USC when you created a remarkably mature short film that left everyone in awe, even Steven Spielberg. I plan to keep tracking you until you receive your own Oscar,” she declared, receiving applause from the audience.

Chu stepped onto the stage with a heartfelt greeting to “Defying Gravity,” the well-known anthem from Wicked, acknowledging Yang and Gold House founder Bing Chen for their long-term support. Reflecting on his choice to bring Crazy Rich Asians to life on screen, Chu fondly referred to the cast as “the most fantastic Asian Avengers we could possibly assemble.” The director expressed gratitude towards members of the API community who backed the successful romantic comedy.

Now, we’re not simply dining at the table, but constructing the magnificent edifice itself. Incredibly, this structure isn’t ordinary wood or stone, it’s gold,” Chu explained to the crowd. “There’s still much left to accomplish, and if you’re all willing, I am ready too. Just as Dorothy wisely stated, ‘No one in all of Oz, no wizard that ever was or will be, can bring us down.'”

(This version maintains the spirit of the original while using more formal language and making the reference to “The Wizard of Oz” clearer.)

On that particular evening, Director Ang Lee received two prestigious honors: the Gold Legend Award and the Gold Generation Award, both for his critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning movie, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” This esteemed filmmaker was moved when he was presented the award by a group of promising young Asian filmmakers. In a jovial manner, he playfully remarked to them, “I’m not quite ready to hand over the baton just yet. You need to keep pushing yourselves even harder.

Lee admitted that he never imagined he’d create films in the U.S., but for the past 35 years, he has been diligently dedicating himself solely to the films he’s working on. Reflecting on the last three and a half decades, he acknowledged his feelings of loneliness. “I felt very isolated when I was here,” he said, “but look at you all, the filmmakers, and the incredible accomplishments you’ve made.” He continued, expressing pride at being involved in this celebration of Asian creativity, our shared passion, and above all, our ability to express ourselves effectively.

During the Saturday night gala, Singer Laufey, the team behind Moana 2, Olympic champions Suni Lee, Lee Kiefer, Torri Huske, Chuck Aoki, tech leader Aravind Srinivas, musician Anderson .Paak, CEO of Pokemon company Tsunekazu Ishihara, author Min Jin Lee, rapper Megan Thee Stallion, and the L.A. Wildlife Heroes were all recognized for their achievements. The Hollywood Reporter‘s co-editor-in-chief Maer Roshan was among this year’s A100 honorees.
