In the revamped version of Oblivion, some thoughtful adjustments have been made to rectify the quirks in the original’s ability and attribute system, but it remains an oddly unbalanced game. The intermediate difficulty level, “Adept,” seems excessively simple, while a minor increase to “Expert” makes even combating a common bandit a nail-biting ordeal. Now I understand why: The intricate calculations happening behind the scenes are absolutely bizarre.
Modder IxionXVII’s “Adjustable Difficulty” mod for Oblivion Remastered offers a wide range of customizable options to tailor the game’s difficulty level according to your preference. What sets this mod apart is that the creator provides clear explanations of what each difficulty setting alters within the game. This clarity instantly makes sense as to why the original Oblivion’s Expert mode felt challenging, if not outright frustrating, for me.
The settings multiply the amount of damage you inflict and receive. Adept has a multiplier of 1 for both, which is logical. However, moving to Expert significantly increases the damage you sustain, while it reduces even legendary Daedric weapons to mere cosplay props. It appears that there’s a significant difference among each difficulty level, and I suspect one challenge was adapting the highly precise slider from the original game, which could be adjusted in 1% increments, into five main categories, resembling those found in Skyrim.
Currently, I enjoy tackling challenges in games and sometimes boast about playing on tougher settings. However, the standard Expert level is excruciatingly difficult, while Adept feels too effortless. But IxionVII’s “2.0” mod at the “Master” difficulty, with double the damage taken and half the damage dealt, strikes a perfect balance for me.
In my perspective as an ardent fan, I’ve always admired the rich, immersive fantasy worlds that The Elder Scrolls series has crafted, but their combat mechanics haven’t exactly left me spellbound in any of its installments. Yet, these games manage to surpass expectations, offering a second life in Nirn that no other game can match. I yearn for the combat and stealth elements to be polished enough to sustain my countless hours delving into Ayleid ruins and Dark Brotherhood missions. The tweaked difficulty level strikes a perfect balance, introducing just the right amount of challenge to keep things engaging without making the experience unbearably frustrating.
