Despite GTA 6’s efforts to move away from previous locales, Liberty City seems to linger as if it were a spirit from a different era, continually reappearing.
It appears that Rockstar Games is focusing more on its Florida-inspired open world, Leonida, but references hidden within trailers, character profiles, and fan speculations continue to bring up Liberty City in discussions.
It’s hard to ignore the hints, whether intentional or not. The bio of one of Grand Theft Auto 6’s playable characters, Lucia Caminos, specifically mentions Liberty City. As per Rockstar’s official site and promotional materials, Lucia and her mother had dreams of a better life while residing in Liberty City.
Initially, that hint may appear insignificant, but it sets the stage for substantial developments. If her history is deeply connected to Liberty City, then it’s likely that we’ll revisit that location via flashbacks or encounter tasks linked to her early years.
1) In the trailers, the rumors haven’t been debunked yet. For instance, in one trailer, eagle-eyed fans noticed a Liberty City license plate on a truck that Jason is pursuing. Additionally, there’s a scene where Lucia delivers a kick inside a combat arena, reminiscent of The Ballad of Gay Tony, which took place in Liberty City. This could suggest a possible return to this city.

1. The necklace she frequently wears in screenshots could have ties to her past, perhaps a keepsake given by her father who is said to have taught her fighting skills. It’s speculated that Liberty City may make an appearance, albeit in a more limited capacity, possibly as a standalone mission much like the North Yankton sequence in GTA 5 or Guarma in Red Dead Redemption 2.
In both instances, Rockstar unveiled an additional location within the game via a cutscene or unique occurrence, and this area could only be visited during certain periods of gameplay. This structure is what many anticipate in this situation too.
One possibility is that another explanation might be Rockstar’s tendency to incrementally expand their open-world environments. For instance, Red Dead Redemption 2 revisited a region from the initial game, and Grand Theft Auto Online introduced Cayo Perico island, which enlarged the play area beyond Los Santos.

If Rockstar adopts this strategy for GTA 6, there’s a chance Liberty City could be introduced later via DLC (Downloadable Content) or online expansions, potentially featuring its own airport. Alternatively, it’s speculated that Lucia’s introduction might take place in Liberty City, offering insights into how she landed in prison before being transported to Leonida.
One creative approach could involve utilizing geography as a narrative tool, dividing past and present by spatial boundaries, all while offering gamers glimpses of Grand Theft Auto’s famous cityscape without overburdening the primary map with excessive content.
Despite the proposal to incorporate Liberty City into an existing expansive game, it hasn’t escaped the scrutiny of doubters. Some contend that the practicality behind this idea seems questionable. Given that Leonida is situated in Florida and Liberty City represents GTA’s interpretation of New York—which are approximately a thousand miles apart in reality—it raises concerns about feasibility.
If Rockstar doesn’t compromise the scope of their game or rely heavily on load screens, making everything feel seamlessly integrated within an open world, it will require a massive amount of resources to achieve this.

Rockstar hasn’t openly confirmed Liberty City’s return yet, and given their tendency to avoid revealing map details too early, these hints towards Liberty City could simply be for flavor rather than suggesting a playable location. However, it’s apparent that Liberty City is deeply ingrained in the narrative of Grand Theft Auto 6.
Lucia’s attachment to the city enhances the emotional complexity of her character, and Rockstar skillfully leverages intricate city details for maximum effect. Briefly revisiting the city through a flashback sequence, recalled memory, or single mission could delight fans without deviating too far from the main storyline centered around Leonida.
It’s been suggested that Grand Theft Auto 6 might expand over time, with Liberty City potentially not included in the initial release. However, there’s a strong possibility it could be saved for a larger project later on – maybe an expansion pack, downloadable content, or even a future development for GTA Online.
