Once upon a time in Cannes … Quentin Tarantino had a night to remember.

The Academy Award-winning filmmaker made an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday evening, gracing the opening ceremony held at the Grand Lumiére Theatre where he had formal duties to signal the commencement of the 12-day festival. “I am privileged to announce the opening of the 78th festival!” Tarantino exclaimed into the microphone.

In a special appearance, the Academy Award-winning director was at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday night for the opening ceremony at the Grand Lumiére Theatre. He had specific duties to mark the start of the 12-day event, and he proudly declared this by saying “I am honored to announce the opening of the 78th festival!” through a microphone.

Having accomplished my mission, I found myself standing there basking in the afterglow of an event filled with political intensity. The moment was sealed as Robert De Niro graciously received an honorary Palme d’Or from none other than Leonardo DiCaprio. With a fiery statement against President Donald Trump and a rallying cry for the artists present (“We need to act, and we need to act now,” he declared), the stage was set ablaze. In a dramatic finale, Quentin Tarantino literally tossed his microphone onto the stage, symbolizing the intensity of the moment.

It appeared that his passionate declaration and his evening at the Palais were perfectly capped off, as it seemed Tarantino was enjoying every second of it.
