Cannes: Fatih Akin’s ‘Amrum’ Sells Wide Ahead of Festival Bow

International sales for Fatih Akin’s film, Amrum, have been secured by Beta Cinema prior to its world premiere at Cannes on Thursday. The German period drama has been acquired by Dulac Distribution in France, A Contracorriente in Spain, Bitters End in Japan, Cherry Pickers in the Benelux region, Cinemart in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, MCF for Former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria, and Imovision for Brazil.

Diane Kruger shares screen time in a film titled “Amrum,” which Akin collaborated on with German director and scriptwriter Hark Bohm. The story is loosely based on Bohm’s personal memories of his childhood during the closing days of World War II on the isolated North Sea island of Amrum. For 12-year-old Nanning, portrayed by newcomer Jasper Billerbeck, life on the island seems like a heavenly paradise. However, as the war concludes, some sinister truths about his family begin to emerge. The cast also includes Laura Tonke, Lisa Hagmeister, Kian Köppke, and Matthias Schweighöfer.

Warner Bros. Pictures Germany will release Amrum in Germany-speaking territories on October 9.

Previously, Akin graced the city of Cannes in 2017 with the film “In the Fade”. This gripping tale, based on true events, featured Kruger as a woman seeking vengeance after her husband and son were brutally murdered by neo-Nazis. Her powerful performance earned Kruger the Best Actress award at Cannes. Akin first gained international recognition in 2004 with “Head-On”, which claimed the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. His 2007 film, “The Edge of Heaven”, was honored with Cannes’ Best Screenplay prize, and his 2009 comedy, “Soul Kitchen”, walked away with a Special Jury Prize in Venice.
