EXCLUSIVE: Salman Khan rarely agrees to retakes, and reason behind it is totally ‘bhai-coded’

Previously on an old podcast, Nawazuddin Siddiqui mentioned that Salman Khan seldom requires retakes and strongly emphasizes nailing the ideal shot in just one attempt. Recently, during a special interview with Hindi Rush, directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru reminisced about filming the song Tere Mast Mast Do Nain from Dabangg. They disclosed that Khan consented to do a retake, but this was due to a compelling reason and, as is typical of ‘Bhai’, it was completely justifiable.

When asked about Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s previous statement in a podcast where he suggested Salman Khan usually shoots only one take, director Vinay Sapru set the record straight by saying this wasn’t true for their collaboration. He elaborated that while Khan frequently completes scenes in a single take, he is willing to film multiple takes if presented with a convincing rationale.

Sapru pointed out that Salman is exceptionally astute and thorough, making it important to have solid reasons before suggesting modifications without proper justification. Reflecting on the filming of the song “Tere Mast Mast Do Nain” from Dabangg, Sapru reminisced about a particular instance during the final day of shooting. On this day, Salman Khan donned a black ensemble and dark sunglasses for a night scene.

During the discussion about the upcoming scene, the filmmakers mentioned that Salman Khan was sitting nearby, listening in quietly. Later on, he strolled over and in a casual manner, asked, “So, what’s happening here?” At this point, they shared the details of the scene with him.

As Salman observed them quietly, seemingly seeking insight into their ideas, the team revealed their innovative viewpoint; they aimed to express Chulbul Pandey’s love in an unconventional manner.

To accomplish this, they employed a striking, crimson heart which would glimmer off his dim shades. They clarified that this embodied Chulbul’s eccentric and lively portrayal of affection. Consequently, the monochrome attire was vital, as it made the red heart more noticeable within the frame.

Enthralled by the concept, I found myself wholeheartedly endorsing it, saying, “Count me in! Let’s roll with this.” Little did I know that this simple decision would eventually become a defining moment, as the poignant heart reflection from that very scene was later used to create the captivating poster design for the song.

When queried if the idea originated somewhere else or was borrowed, the movie creators made it clear that it was an original concept of theirs. They emphasized their artistic approach, which is about being pioneers rather than imitators.

In a succinct yet clear manner, Salman Khan described Chulbul Pandey’s character to them initially, and his unique ability as a son of a writer allowed the concept to become instantly clear. This pivotal discussion signaled the start of their work on the film Dabangg.

In summary, they pointed out that although Salman Khan often performs scenes in a single take, he remains receptive to multiple takes when there’s a strong rationale behind them. If he finds the explanation convincing, he’s prepared to do as many as one hundred takes. However, if the argument is simply “I just have a feeling about it,” he doesn’t consider it valid.
