Sunset Hills review – “Beautiful, captivating world”

  • Charming world full of characters to meet
  • Fun puzzles to solve
  • Lots of areas to explore

Sunset Hills is an enchanting, point-and-click adventure game that lets you assume the role of Nico, a former soldier longing to reconnect with comrades from past battles. Despite the passage of time, your goal now is to journey across the globe and catch up with these old friends of yours.

In Sunset Hills, the story unfolds across various chapters, each one taking me to a distinct city in search of a dear friend. The adventure begins with Tobik, where I disembark from a train, only to miss my connecting bus. This initial misadventure serves as the first challenge in my journey to reunite with my cherished companions.

In this game, there are numerous puzzles to solve and characters to engage with, but at times, I struggled to determine who or what I should be engaging. Occasionally, bubbles indicate interactive elements, but not always. The process of utilizing items from my inventory felt a bit cumbersome; while combining them is straightforward, I often wished there was an option to attempt using them and possibly fail, as certain moments seemed ripe for action.

Exploring the quaint, almost-seaside hamlet of Tobik presents a series of mini-adventures and brainteasers designed for its diverse residents. Many of these locals exhibit an innate curiosity about your background and your relationship with the town’s affluent elite, offering tantalizing snippets of their personal stories to provide context during your interactions with them.

At Sunset Hills, the spotlight isn’t on these people; rather, it’s all about your adventure. While some parts of the narrative seemed slightly disjointed, not entirely clear in English, it was nonetheless enjoyable to navigate through the intriguing puzzles.

After meeting Doug, you find yourself leaping ahead in the narrative, straight into chapter two, which wraps up rather abruptly. This transition brings you to another town, introducing a fresh friend and new set of challenges to overcome, as well as intriguing characters to interact with. The game offers a comfortable, gradual pace, with artwork that is extremely engaging.
