Prada is putting more money toward the big screen in support of independent cinema.
Initially announced by Variety, the Fondazione Prada Film Fund is set to debut – an annual program dedicated to boosting independent cinema with a budget of approximately 1.5 million euros ($1.68 million). The application process is anticipated later this year, and the fund aims to back projects of exceptional artistic merit. Each year, the jury will pick between 10 and 12 feature film proposals (without any geographical or genre limitations) to provide financing for their development, production, and post-production stages.
Starting from February 2023, Paolo Moretti has taken over the management of Fondazione’s cinema program. Known for his role as director of the Cannes Fortnight section, Moretti is recognized within the organization for conceiving the idea for the Fondazione Prada Film Fund. His task is to see this concept through to completion, and he will be aided in this by Rebecca De Pas. Her previous roles include serving on the selection committee at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, acting as an art consultant for the Viennale, and co-directing FiDLab from 2009 to 2019.
For more than two decades, Prada, similar to fashion houses such as Chanel and Saint Laurent, has demonstrated a strong affinity for the art of filmmaking. As Miuccia Prada, president and head of the foundation, put it, “Film serves as a creative incubator and a platform for cultural growth.” This dedication is reflected in their active participation in the production of new films and support of auteur cinema. For over 20 years, the Fondazione has explored these artistic mediums in various manners, promoting a forward-thinking, thought-provoking, and visionary concept of film. Through this fund, they aim to foster and expand conversations between creativity and contemporary innovation.
Additionally, Prada is preparing an engaging exhibition for the big screen. This creative project comes from Alejandro González Iñárritu and revolves around his 2000 film “Amores Perros”. The exhibit will run from September 18, 2025 to February 26, 2026.
