SAG-AFTRA and Nickelodeon Reach Tentative Agreement on Animation Contract

Nickelodeon consents to implement “common sense” safeguards for AI technology in relation to voice actors featured in their animated series such as “The Patrick Star Show” and “Dora the Explorer,” as stated by the performers’ union, SAG-AFTRA.

On Wednesday, the union disclosed that they had negotiated a preliminary agreement with Nickelodeon concerning voice acting in their animated series airing on basic cable and Paramount+. The agreement encompasses shows like Rugrats, The Loud House, Kamp Koral, and Rock Paper Scissors. This three-year tentative contract further includes wage hikes, a new bonus structure, and expedited payment deadlines.

On Wednesday, the union revealed they had struck a tentative deal with Nickelodeon on voice acting for their animated series on basic cable and Paramount+. This agreement involves shows such as Rugrats, The Loud House, Kamp Koral, and Rock Paper Scissors. The three-year preliminary contract also includes pay increases, a new incentive system, and faster payment terms.

The union’s national board is set to vote on whether to ratify the contract in July.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, our lead negotiator at SAG-AFTRA, expressed gratitude to the diligent team responsible for negotiations, who represent voice artists contributing to Nickelodeon’s shows. He was particularly happy that Nickelodeon consented to reasonable A.I. protections for these voice actors, as stated.

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Nickelodeon for comment.

The AI elements of the Nickelodeon contract are influenced by safeguards that were agreed upon in SAG-AFTRA’s independent TV animation contracts from 2023. For example, the Nickelodeon arrangement classifies “voice actor” as exclusively referring to humans and provides guidelines for distinguishing a performer in a digital replica (in the contract, recognizability activates certain protections).

In animation, a single actor may lend their voice to multiple characters (for example, Nancy Cartwright playing both Bart Simpson and Ralph Wiggum on The Simpsons). This agreement specifies that actors should only be credited for contributing to the creation of the replica through business records in instances involving employment-based digital replicas. However, in cases where the digital replicas are independently created, only their character voices need to be distinguishable.

Other modifications enable artists to earn royalties when their voices are electronically altered into different languages, and they necessitate frequent discussions between the union and producers regarding the application of artificial intelligence within the work environment.

SAG-AFTRA, on the other hand, boasts about raising legacy, interstitial, and promo tag rates for its members, along with a 25% bonus for “multitracking/sweetening,” which is the process of combining multiple audio tracks. Additionally, payment deadlines have been pushed forward by five days.

David Joliffe, chair of the Nickelodeon Animation Agreement negotiating committee, expressed his excitement over a robust contract for voice actors that features improved AI guidelines, designed to safeguard performers. He also hinted at much to be joyful about with this agreement and looks forward to presenting it to the Board for their consideration.
